The Nursing Supervisor works with the Nursing Staff of the facility.TheNursingSupervisorplans,organizes,coordinatesanddirectsthenursingfunctionsforprofessionalandnon-professionalnursingpersonneltoensurethehighestqualityofcareisprovidedinacosteffectivemannerwiththeresidentsinthefacility.Thisisdoneinanefficientandtimelymannerwithconsiderationforbothhealthcareandlegalresponsibilitiesoftheresidents,thefacilityandtheemployees.The Nursing Supervisor works with the Director of Nursing to exercise responsibility and accountability for nursing service objectives, implements policies and procedures, coordinates nursing function, activities, and nursing care, as well as providing oversight and supervision to the nursing staff, and their training and competency. The Nursing Supervisors’ role within the chain of command is to act as a resource person, providing the necessary information and assistance to the staff which will enable them to perform their duties and responsibilities in the best manner possible. The Supervisor serves as a primary communication link among shifts and units.
The Nursing Supervisor works with the Director of Nursing to assure the following responsibilities are accomplished. This list is only partial and should not be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks and responsibilities.
1. Ensures each unit is appropriately staffed at the beginning of the shift. 2. Makes adjustments as necessary, replacing staff as needed for the oncoming shift.3. Makes rounds at the beginning of the assigned shift and frequently thereafter and implements interventions as needed. 4. Supervise nursing activities and promotes improvement in nursing care.5. Maintains comfortable and pleasant environment and promotes elimination of hazards. 6. Routinely checks and evaluates supply of emergency equipment7. Ensure that supplies are available in proper quantities, that equipment is available in good condition, and that personnel using such supplies and equipment know where such are to be found and know the proper care and use.8. Receives thorough reports from Charge Nurses on all shifts and works closely with them to insure maximum total care.9. Participates in nursing care as needed and is responsible for the direct handling of any emergency situation which may arise.JD-422 (07/21)Page 3 of 610. Recognizes significant changes in the condition of residents and takes appropriate action11. Assists with care as necessary to assure quality care is provided. This may include but not conclusive of assisting with ADLs, giving medications, doing treatments, supervising and assisting with meal service, calling physicians, transcribing orders, etc.12. Assess each resident in acute distress or unusual situations during the scheduled time in the facility. 13. Ensures that all personnel on the shift are oriented to the duties assigned to them.14. Assigns personnel according to various skills in relation to resident needs.15. Divides nursing duties of the facility to appropriate staff.16. Works as staff relief in emergencies.17. Conducts orientation, in-services, and educational programs for nursing personnel.18. Have the ability to learn computer systems, system applications and related office equipment.19. Promotes effective work relationships with the administrator, medical staff, personnel, volunteers, agencies, and management staff affiliated with the facility. 20. Attends and participates in facility meetings. 21. Participates in Quality Assessment and Improvement Program22. Participates in Quality Assessment Performance Improvement Program23. Reviews Quality Measures and takes an active role in improving quality. 24. Assist with investigations and follow up of incidents, accidents and grievances. 25. Audits documentation26. Reports immediately to supervisor, administrator and local law enforcement situations involving abuse, neglect, or suspicion of a crime. 27.
