What are the responsibilities and job description for the Food Service Worker (Full-Time) position at Care for the Homeless?
Care for the Homeless (CFH) is a growing not-for-profit health care and social service agency that serves the homeless population of New York City. CFH provides medical and behavioral health services at thirty shelters, soup kitchens, and drop-in centers throughout NYC.
Under direct supervision by the Shelter Director, employees in this position will prepare, heat and serve food as assigned in accordance with federal, state and local health regulations and safety codes. Individuals in this position also must have crucial customer service and effective communication skills to provide quality dining services.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare, heat and serve nutritious meals
- Ensures that food services meet health regulations and safety codes
- Maintain cleanliness of the dining area including, cleaning up after all meals
- Understands weights and measures as it relates to portion control.
- Maintain the service and preparation areas in a clean and organized manner
- Receive all incoming food deliveries, maintain the cleanliness and order of all food storage areas
- Attend on-going training for all food service staff, this includes: required trainings set forth from DOH and DHS
- Collaborate with other applicable department areas, in preparation of facility events and activities; where food services are needed
- Assists and engages in post-service cleaning, breakdown and restocking of food prep/serving equipment
- Guarantees resident satisfaction through clear and open communication
- Possesses a genuine caring and compassionate attitude for our residents
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings
- Participate in quality improvement activities
- Other relevant duties as requested
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D required
- Minimum of six (6) months experience in the culinary field, preferably, in a non-profit institution.
- Must have a valid Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Qualifying Certificate in Food Protection.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
- Position can require on-call availability.

POLICY
Care for the Homeless advocates for policies to ameliorate, prevent and end homelessness. We occasionally circulate policy information to employees and require that staff review it. While we don’t require it, we encourage every employee to become involved in supporting and advocating for our agency’s policy agenda and related activities.
