The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) is a non-profit that has served the immigrant community on Long Island for four decades through legal services, community education, and advocacy. We seek a Social Worker with a deep understanding of and commitment to the public interest to provide critical social support services to immigrant children and families on Long Island. The Social Worker position is full-time, salaried, and exempt.

Overview of the Role

The Social Worker will provide social work services to new Americans on Long Island, especially recently arrived immigrants. The Social Worker will be an integral part of an interdisciplinary team that works closely to address the social, health, and legal needs of this vulnerable population. The Social Worker will also supervise other CARECEN staff providing case management, as well as interns and/or volunteers.

Primary Duties

  • ● Conduct bio-psycho-social assessments and care plans
  • ● Provide case management to meet presenting needs, including, but not limited to, health, housing, education, food insecurity, and workforce development
  • ● Provide counseling and mental health services as needed, as well as support the clients while finding mental health resources outside the organization
  • ● Conduct short-term crisis intervention
  • ● Work closely with other Community Program’s teams and CARECEN’s Legal team to support the immigrant community and participate in events as needed.
  • ● Supervise case manager(s), providing guidance and coaching regarding social work best practices, therapeutic interventions, and case management
  • ● Supervise volunteers and program staff during community support hours
  • ● Provide social work students with task management support or supervision
  • (if SIFI-certified) during their field placement
  • ● Attend staff meetings and case conferences to provide guidance on issues affecting the broader CARECEN caseload
  • ● Document information on clients’ electronic files and keep case notes up to date
  • ● Assist with grant reporting requirements, including collecting and maintaining required data

  • ● Support CARECEN’s Annual Fundraisers such as the Toy Drive, Student Drive, or similar community support initiatives.
  • ● Other duties as assigned Requirements and Qualifications
  • ● Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited university.
  • ● Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). If not LMSW, the staff member must
  • be working towards the license
  • ● Experience working with the immigrant community
  • ● Experience providing case management
  • ● Knowledge of services available to the immigrant population
  • ● Knowledge of mental health, trauma, physical illness, physical disabilities, intellectual and developmental delays
  • ● Experience providing supervision of volunteers, interns, or case managers
  • ● Demonstrated commitment to serving high-needs populations
  • ● Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • ● Ability to work within a team and motivate and mentor others
  • ● Fluent in Spanish and English
  • Home Office: Hybrid / based out of CARECEN’s Hempstead and Brentwood offices
  • Supervisor: Lead Social Worker
  • Compensation:
  • ● $55,000 to $70,000 annually
