A Brief Overview
The Patent Agent for Energy-Based Devices is responsible for managing and overseeing Merz Aesthetics’ patent portfolio related to these technologies and preparing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications. The role collaborates with inventors to assess the patentability of new innovations and conducts freedom-to-operate analyses to identify potential patent infringement risks and ensure that new products can be developed and launched without legal obstacles.
What you will do
- Manage patent portfolio:
- Manage and oversee the Merz Aesthetics’ patent portfolio in energy-based devices
- Global patent prosecution:
- Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide in cooperation with external counsels & maintain and defend patents
- Conduct patent analyses:
- Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate and validity analyses
- Identify patentable inventions:
- Collaborate with R&D teams to identify patentable inventions
- Implement patent strategies:
- Implementation and execution of patent strategies & provide strategic advice on patent-related matters to senior management
- Competitor monitoring:
- Monitor and analyze competitor patents and industry trends and take legal actions to ensure Merz Aesthetics’ market position
- Material release:
- Release of publications, marketing materials and IITs & ensure compliance with all relevant patent laws and regulations
- Trainings:
- Provide patent law trainings
- Database maintenance:
- Control and support of patent database maintenance
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Engineering, or a related field (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Physics)
- At least 5 years’ experience in patent law, with a focus on energy-based devices
- Passed USPTO registration exam or equivalent qualification
- Ability to course correct as needed due to changing priorities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Engineering, or a related field (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Physics)
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent legal qualification
Technical & Functional Skills:
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated history of teamwork and cross functional collaboration
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams and SharePoint
- Excellent intercultural collaboration skills
- Knowledge of Patent Management system/software
- Extensive knowledge and experience in patent searching, particularly with Orbit/Questel or an equivalent tool
