The structural engineering director will ensure that all projects within the structural group adhere to the latest codes, industry standards, and best practices. This senior position is integral to providing early design direction, driving quality and infrastructure improvements, and leading the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process for all projects. You'll also oversee project submissions, provide feedback on necessary revisions, and maintain strong client communication. This position may also involve project management responsibilities, proposal development, market growth initiatives, and strategic planning.
Our Transportation division is a talented team of experts working together to deliver engineering solutions that move people in a smarter way. We provide full-service planning, design and construction management services on everything from roadways and bridges to airports, stormwater infrastructure, and parks/recreation projects primarily for state and local agencies and municipalities.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in structural/civil engineering and an Illinois Structural Engineer (SE) license required. A master’s degree in structural engineering or a Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.
- 20 years of experience in structural engineering with a focus on transportation projects.
- At least 5 years of experience in a leadership or managerial role within an engineering environment.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of structural engineering principles and methods, specifically related to bridges, retaining walls, culverts, surveys, investigations, and equipment for private, public, and transportation projects.
- Strong project management capabilities, with experience leading large, complex projects from inception to completion.
- Proven ability to manage project budgets, schedules, and client relationships effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency in structural design software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Manage medium complexity, non-prime or prime multidiscipline projects, including oversight of subconsultants.
- Ensure compliance with client and internal management system requirements and enforce project delivery procedures.
- Utilize Primera’s financial and project management applications proficiently.
- Apply advanced knowledge of loss prevention practices in project execution.
- Assist in scoping projects and participate in client meetings to present approach options.
- Ensure all projects meet department technical standards (e.g., specifications, details).
- Develop and deliver training sessions for department employees, featuring industry experts, vendors, and current trends in transportation and civil engineering.
- Provide ongoing oversight and involvement in projects from conceptual design phase to project completion.
- Collaborate with group and department managers to create and implement training plans for staff, including sourcing materials and coordinating seminars.
- Oversee QA/QC activities, ensuring projects meet Primera’s quality standards before documents are finalized and signed.
- Stay up-to-date with technology advancements and ensure the department has the necessary tools to meet evolving client needs.
- Maintain and update professional resource libraries and department software tools.
- Participate in technical committees and memberships and contribute technical papers to industry journals.
