GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Operates practice phone system, provides routine information, and directs calls to appropriate area.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of phone system and communication procedures. Skill in operating a communications system. Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction. Ability to speak clearly and concisely with a pleasant telephone voice. Ability to handle stressful situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.
Education: High school graduate or GED.
Experience: Six months telephone operator experience, preferably in a clinic setting. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
Certificate/License: None
ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for minimum experience requirement.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports directly to Patient Access/Information Management Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires physical hand dexterity and full range of motion for operation of phone system. Requires sitting for long periods of time. Requires ability to hear within normal range. Requires ability to work under stressful or emergency situations with high concentration and energy level.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment. Involves contact with patients and the public. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

- Channels all incoming calls and routes calls to appropriated departments.
- Takes message as requested and processes appropriately; e.g. consults for physicians.
- Communicates general clinic information.
- Organizes and efficiently handles phone system material.
- Uses paging system according to procedure.
- Maintains appropriate computer tasks.
- Verifies patient status on computer.
- Data entry in electronic medical records.
- Follow practice policies and procedures.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as required.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Enhances professional growth and development through in-service meetings, education programs, conferences, etc.
- Performs related work as required.
