Overview

The Department of Public Safety is seeking a Radio Technology Specialist. The Specialist will perform duties to ensure mission critical life safety networks are optimized, reliable, and comply with Federal Communications rules and regulations. The incumbent performs installation of land mobile radio (LMR) equipment in vehicles, radio sites, and offices. The Specialist also assists higher level Specialists with duties pertaining to supporting LMR systems, including communication tower work. Additionally, the position will perform preventative maintenance checks of LMR equipment. As the Radio Technology Specialist I gains basic skills and knowledge, greater work independence is expected. Technical certification / licensing is required within 6 months of hire date.

Candidates must be able to work under hazardous and / or physically demanding conditions (e.g., climbing, balancing, lifting in extreme heat or cold, in rain, snow, poor lighting, poor ventilation, fumes, ice, mud, etc.). Additionally, candidates must be comfortable accessing remote communications locations via 4WD vehicles, snow machines, and track vehicles. Some sites may require access via hiking and snowshoeing over steep terrain.

This position is not eligible for telework and work will take place in the field or in office, and call-in duty will be required during emergency situations.

This position, Public Safety Radio Technology Specialist I (Job Requisition #50792) , is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a Limited Service position, which is non-tenured and authorized through 06 / 30 / 2027. Limited Service positions are established for specially funded projects or programs. PUBLIC SAFETY BACKGROUND CHECKS : Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position to include finger-print supported Criminal Records, Motor Vehicle records, Personal History, Credit and any additional background check(s).

Incumbents must be able to work under hazardous and / or physically demanding conditions (e.g. climbing, balancing, lifting in extreme heat or cold, in rain, snow, poor lighting, poor ventilation, fumes, ice, mud, etc.). The incumbent may be working outside during winter conditions or inside a climate-controlled area. The specialist uses 4-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles, tracked vehicles and snowshoes to access remote locations where the electronic equipment is housed. The specialist is required to climb communications structures up to 100' as part of their duties. The Specialist must be able to lift a minimum of 60 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years or more of military experience in a communications technology field that includes repairing electronics equipment.

Two (2) years or more experience working in a land mobile radio (LMR) service center maintaining commercial networks or related duties.

Successful completion of a formal electronics technology program.

Special Requirements

Technical certification (e.g. NARTE (National Association of Radio and Telecommunications Engineers), Radio Operator / Maintainer License, FCC General Class License or equivalent is required or must be obtained within six (6) months of date of hire.

Must possess and maintain a valid Vermont driver's license.

Call-in duty may be required during emergency situations.
