Job Description:

STC is seeking highly motivated scientists across all levels to support scientific research, application development, and product support and validation for the remote sensing of the Earth’s radiation budget, (inter)calibration of satellite radiances, and conversion of those radiances into various forms of imagery. These efforts support the Radiation Budget Geophysical Product Category in the NESDIS Level 1 Requirements document and include the activities of the Radiation Budget STAR Science Teams. The following current operational products are supported -

  • Instantaneous reflected shortwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere (RSR);
  • Instantaneous and daily average downward shortwave radiation at the surface (DSR);
  • Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) retrieved by the GOES-R Enterprise Shortwave Radiation Budget (enterprise SRB);
  • Geostationary Shortwave Irradiance Product (GSIP) algorithms;
  • Experimental geostationary outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) product; and
  • On the polar-orbiting satellite side, OLR is retrieved in NUCAPS.

 

Required activities consist of the following –

  • Maintenance, optimization, testing, and documentation of versions of all algorithms and associated validation tools;
  • Continued product validation;
  • Post-launch cal/val activities; and
  • Overall program support, to include maturity reviews.

 

Potential future activities may target other spectral intervals (e.g., UV) and/or the application of

  • machine learning in algorithm development.
Job Requirements

The ability to develop and maintain science applications in cloud-based operating environments

is required in support of the NOAA-NESDIS 5-year plan to migrate to a cloud-based production

and development environment. Selected candidates shall be proficient in programming in FORTRAN, Python and/or IDL, and C , as well as proficient in creating and maintaining Web content.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Astronomy, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Climatology, Environmental, Geology, Materials Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, Space Applications, or related field
