As a valued member of our interdisciplinary team, you'll play a crucial role in providing patient-centered care across our network of healthcare facilities. From inpatient rehabilitation hospitals to skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, memory care units, and outpatient clinics, our diverse setting offers a unique opportunity to apply your expertise in optometry.

In the inpatient hospitals and outpatient low vision clinic, you'll address a variety of visual challenges, including neurologic visual changes and acute ocular diseases. Collaborating closely with colleagues in physical medicine and rehabilitation, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, you'll experience the collaborative essence of integrated care.

Beyond hospital duties, our outpatient clinic serves as a resource for individuals navigating low vision. Here, you'll continue patient care post-hospitalization and welcome referrals from within our system and external ophthalmologists, neurologists and primary care. Our partnership with the Florida Low Vision Initiative provides an additional avenue to serve children with visual impairments, enriching your professional experience.

With a manageable caseload of 10-12 patients per day, you'll have the opportunity to provide personalized care that goes beyond traditional optometry. Join us in shaping the future of vision care within rehabilitation medicine, where your contributions truly matter.

Responsibilities: 

  • Reviews patient history and interprets physician referral. 
  • Evaluates patient's status, eye health, refractive error, and acuities as well as other standard optometric care.  Evaluates for binocular vision and visual-perceptual deficits. Evaluates for visual rehabilitation needs.
  • Develops and adjusts on an ongoing basis a treatment program based on patient/family needs, goals, strengths, age, abilities, and preferences.      Consults with physicians, other rehabilitation team members, patient and family to design a coordinated treatment plan.
  • Provides referrals to Occupational Therapist. 
  • Performs patient treatment through the use of appropriate optometric interventions.
  • Re-evaluates patient's status, and any environmental factors, to modify/terminate the treatment program as appropriate.
  • Maintains active and supportive communication with patients and others concerned regarding progress, problems, home programs, and other issues related to the therapeutic process.
  • Maintain updates in vision rehabilitation practice through webinars, conferences and continuing education.          
  • Manages schedule to meet departmental productivity expectations using sound clinical and professional reasoning.
  • Attends staff meetings, program meetings, and in service.
  • Maintains accurate daily billing charges and productivity log.
  • Documents evaluations, progress notes, family/patient education, and all other forms in accordance with department policy and procedures. 
  • Maintains accurate, comprehensive, and professional written documentation. 

Job Qualifications: 

  • Doctorate degree in optometry and must be licensed as an optometrist in the state of Florida. 
  • Previous training or experience with vision rehabilitation is preferred.
