What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Specialist, Recreation Programs, PRN (As Needed) position at Careers?
Under the leadership of the Manager, the Program Specialist provides hands-on support for program activity and special event planning and management athlete/participant, student and volunteer recruitment, training, supervision and retention equipment and supply inventory management clerical administrative duties to include database management and data collection as well as ongoing development. The Specialist will establish and maintain positive, supportive relationships with program participants, family members, volunteers, students, media, colleagues and all community members, serving as an ambassador for the program at all times.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that necessary equipment and supplies are present at all weekly activities and special events.
- Assist with transfer of participants to/from wheelchairs and activity equipment.
- Create a positive environment by encouraging participants, volunteers, and families during program activities.
- Set-up and clean-up of space and other resources utilized during activity and special events.
- Inform participants, volunteers and staff of all programmatic updates through written, email, or in-person communication.
- Serve as primary contact for all new participants and volunteers in assigned sport
- Perform clerical and administrative duties such as documenting attendance, filing, copying, and email communications.
- Report overall attendance trends and supply needs of the program to manager.
- Maintain participant safety during activities.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- Facilitate the physical and social engagement of participants, families and volunteers at each activity/event
- Serve as content expert in assigned sports and other responsibilities to include rules/regulations, classification and officiating
- Ensure customer satisfaction in all areas of assigned responsibilities
- Assume responsibility for increasing unique individuals and total participation in assigned sport
- Collaborate with team leadership and department leadership regarding program management and process improvement
- Manage and/or support management of activity/special event proceedings to include direction of participant, volunteers, students, media, family, spectators and community members at large
- Serve as media contact as needed
- Load and unload equipment to support each activity/event
- Train, direct and supervise volunteers/interns at each activity/event
- Create or coordinate with resources the required adaptation to ensure optimal participation in the activity/event
- Engage in social media per program guidelines
- Collaborate with administrative staff in document creation, special event planning and travel coordination
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement and/or communicate to the manager as appropriate
Equipment Specialist Specifics:
- Perform or ensure major equipment repairs across the program
- Collaborate with administrative staff with the maintenance of the equipment inventory
- Perform routine maintenance on all equipment inventory
- Pull 24’ trailer to all major events
- Collaborate with Brooks Rehabilitation Facilities Management regarding maintenance of Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program vehicles and trailers.
Qualifications:
- Two or more years of experience in assigned responsibilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in an allied health/education profession preferred.
- Experience and a strong desire to serve physically disabled persons in a post-rehab environment.
- Current CRP certification or commitment to complete certification within 30 days of hire.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of various disabilities (developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, stroke, Parkinson's and TBI).
- Experience with children/pediatrics preferred.

Physical Requirements (OSHA)
- Lifting disabled individuals during transfers with assistance as needed
- Stretching, lifting, reaching ,jumping, standing, sitting based on scheduled activities
- Able to perform heavy lifting to include people and equipment as needed
Hours: 20 hours per week as needed, Will include Nights and Weekends
Compensation: Experience, education and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
