Sanitation Supervisor

State Garden is looking for a Sanitation Supervisor to help oversee our Sanitation team! Located in Chelsea, MA, State Garden has been in the produce business for over 75 years and we are proud of the high quality products we sell. What started out as a family-run celery business has transformed into the company we are today – a top supplier of organic and conventional tender leaf greens, spinach and celery hearts.

The Sanitation Supervisor directs and oversees the activities of the nighttime Plant Sanitation Team. This includes sanitation duties and tasks related to the daily cleaning/sanitizing of various work environments/buildings, internal and external property, machinery, production equipment, production lines, tools, and parts. At times, this role requires a “hands-on” approach. Therefore, the supervisor must be able and willing to perform various hands-on sanitation duties and tasks while working alongside team members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supervise and lead the overnight sanitation crew.
• Ensure all personnel are trained on proper cleaning procedures, chemical handling, and safety protocols; Maintains a departmental on-boarding training program. Assists with annual training assignments.
• Schedule and manage sanitation activities, including cleaning schedules and task assignments.
• Follow the Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS).
• Develop, implement, and maintain sanitation programs and procedures, including SSOPs and cGMPs.
• Ensure compliance with relevant food safety regulations, such as FDA guidelines and SQF standards.
• Conduct regular inspections of the facility, equipment, and production area to identify issues and prevent recurrence.
• Implement corrective actions to address any identified issues and prevent recurrence; Write and submit work orders to address defects.
• Oversees the proper storage, handling, and use of cleaning chemicals and sanitizers, ensuring safety protocols are maintained.
• Maintains accurate records of chemical usage and inventory, Works and communicates with chemical provider/s.
• Maintains accurate records of sanitation activities, inspections and corrective actions.
• Prepares various reports and documentation as required by leadership or regulatory agencies.
• Identifies areas for improvement in sanitation practices and implements changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• Works with procurement when placing orders for various supplies and chemicals; Works with Accounts Receivable and may approve invoices for purchases.
• Works with HR and Agency leadership when hiring or terminating employment; Holds staff accountable for shortcomings; Utilizes coaching, the non-conformance and progressive discipline processes to correct behaviors.
• Special projects or other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in applicable areas (Food Science, Food Industry Compliance) and 1 year in a hands-on food manufacturing/processing environment preferred or 3 years of direct sanitation, quality, or production leadership experience in a food manufacturing/processing environment required.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Experience with the use of industrial food manufacturing cleaning chemicals; Knows how to read a Safety Data Sheet.
• OSHA 10- or 30-hour training preferred; Exposure to some OSHA / Safety training required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to read and interpret documents (i.e., Safety Rules, Chemical Labels, Safety Data Sheets)
• Strong planning and time management capabilities (Ability to stay ahead of the need).
• Ability to lead and work in a team.
• Knowledge of human and food safety, HACCP, and cGMPs
• Prior experience with SQF or BRC is preferred.
• Bilingual language skills highly preferred (Spanish, French or Creole).
