The Vice President (VP) of Product Development – Infusion Systems, R&D, provides functional leadership towards the creation, design, development and ultimate confirmation that infusion solutions meet the needs of the customer (and, course, those of the prescribed therapy). Reporting to the Worldwide VP for R&D, MMS, the VP Product Development, Infusion Systems R&D will lead high-performance teams of 200 firmware, application software, enterprise software, systems, and hardware engineers across the globe, and have responsibility for fostering a culture of innovation, accountability and psychological safety, while regularly assessing and improving organizational capability (and capacity) to maintain a world-class R&D organization.
We are searching for a proven, seasoned engineering leader to deliver the multi-generational roadmap of MMS’ $1B Infusion Platform (with a portfolio that includes BD Alaris infusion systems and next generation infusion solutions). The leader will work closely with the Infusion business platform leader to develop the vision and supporting roadmap for the next generation of infusion solutions. Additionally, the leader will also collaborate closely with dispensing and pharmacy automation R&D leadership, business and cross-functional leaders across MMS to deliver MMS’ connected medication management strategy. The incumbent will lead a team responsible for developing complex, connected electromechanical systems that address unmet connected medication management needs in all settings and which require a solutions based approach to fully deliver the benefits around infusion therapy, medication safety and clinician efficiency. Scope of responsibilities also includes sustaining engineering and life cycle management of in-market infusion product portfolio.
The incumbent should have a strong track record of servant leadership of “best-in-class” R&D organizations in driving innovation and new product development of solutions that cover a complex set of hardware, software, informatics. As such, the incumbent is not only a strong leader with an architectural mindset but has an in-depth understanding of engineering principles across the fields of systems, mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineering.
Role is hybrid and based in San Diego, CA.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Drive global, innovation, new product development and life-cycle management of infusion solution portfolio, with the goal of increasing predictability of execution and meeting or exceeding customer expectations.
Establish strategy and direction for infusion solution technology development and insource/outsource development activities in collaboration with the WW VP of R&D for MMS and in alignment with strategic plans established by MMS (and platform) leadership.
Provide leadership – including optimal staffing plans – and overall management of a team of firmware, application software, enterprise software, systems, and hardware engineers, test engineers and support staff.
Experience working in a highly collaborative, driven environment across functions, business units and regional teams. Includes driving close cross-functional collaboration with the business platform, Regulatory, Quality, Medical Affairs, and Operations teams.
Demonstrate managerial ambidexterity by appropriately balancing the long-term innovation with the short-term product development.
Recruit/select best in class talent and functional leaders for development of connected electromechanical solutions, and which satisfy interoperability and enterprise level connectivity requirements in all care settings. Incumbent is a strong assessor of talent, is able to drive functional excellence in technology and product development across the infusion portfolio.
Routinely evaluate department capacity and capability relative to total demand for firmware, software and hardware engineering capability and advise business leadership accordingly. Complete hiring manager activities as required.
Proactively identify customer, technologies and/or market trends in connected medication management. Must be agile in redirecting R&D efforts to generate business value. Serves as a consultant to management on technology trends and risks.
Accountable for managing priorities of dispensing R&D associate activity and ensure compliance to budget; Develop and administer performance expectations across the infusion R&D organization.
Identify synergistic strategic opportunities with development partners to execute platform initiatives while improving overall productivity.
A deep understanding of orchestration, release, source control and workflow management eco-systems.
Interact internally and externally with executive level management.
Participate on local or business leadership teams as appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
B.S., M.S in Computer Science/Software/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering or related field required; PhD preferred. Minimum of fifteen years relevant experience with at least ten years of applicable managerial experience in R&D management at a suitable leadership level with strong people development and delegation skills.
Demonstrated strategic mindset to complement (and/or constructively challenge) our business leaders on connected medication management; is able to readily offer novel technology solutions to difficult business, platform, or technical problems.
Has managed a large R&D organization, preferably, responsible for connected, Class II/III electromechanical medical solutions in the acute care space; and has taken that organization to the next level of performance.
Experience with training, mentoring and teaching in a highly technical environment.
Demonstrated ability to drive change in large, complex organizations.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
Demonstrated ability to partner with Regulatory Affairs and Medical Affairs in interactions with regulatory bodies.
Demonstrated capability as member of project team and leader of a project team.
Demonstrated capability of managing customer expectations, both internal and external, including frequent interactions/presentations with key customers.
Direct experience managing large electromechanical systems/hardware project teams serving the acute care space, preferably with extensive experience in addressing interoperability requirements with hospital and pharmacy information systems and hospital Internet-of-Things applications.
Strong technical skills with agility to think architecturally or employ a “1st principles” approach depending on the situation.
