What are the responsibilities and job description for the Materials Manager position at Careplex Orthopaedic Ambulatory Surgery Center?
Under the direction of the Administrator or Director of Nursing, performs all management and supervisory duties and tasks as required to ensure the safe, efficient, and expedient operation and function of the clinical/surgical material purchasing and central supply distribution areas.
- Responsible for the department budget, cost containment, fixed asset management and capital expenditure
- Develops and implements processes to maintain an accurate perpetual inventory and system.
- Arranges for transfer of materials to meet surgery schedules
- Examines materials for defects and ensures materials are satisfactory and up to the proper level of standard for usage and effectiveness
- Responsible for maintaining adequate surgical supplies, instruments, equipment, linens and other surgery center materials.
- Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective and/or preventive measures
- Adheres to written policies of the Surgery Center
- Participates in and supports Quality Assurance and Improvement Program
- Participates in task forces and committees as assigned
- Demonstrates willingness to learn and accept changes
- Responsible for completing mandatory classes relative to job responsibilities at the Surgery Center (OSHA and other safety related classes)
- Participates in the orientation of new employees
- Interfaces with the Business Office Manager to ensure accurate recording of materials purchases in the financial accounting and Inventory system
- Works with clinical staff to assure accurate supplies used capture and identifies cost containment opportunities.
- An undergraduate degree in business administration or commerce, with classes in accounting, finance, business law, production, and operations preferred
- Minimum of 2 years previous ASC/hospital experience in related field (Purchasing, CS, SPD, Receiving)
- 1-2 years of managerial experience focusing on cost reduction and inventory control

Skills Required:
- Personal computer and previous automated purchasing/inventory control system
required
- Knowledge and functional understanding of the surgical equipment
- Good math skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology and medical equipment and supplies
Work Environment
- Ambulatory surgery center/hospital, fast-paced setting
- OSHA, Category II - Does not involve routine exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks (indirect patient care jobs; i.e. Unit Clerk, Pastoral Care, etc.). *
