What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Information & Technology (HIT) Specialist (Internal) position at CareSouth?
A. SUMMARY: The Health Information & Technology (HIT) Specialist plays a vital role in developing and
managing health and dental information technology at CareSouth. The HIT Specialist works closely with
the Health Information & Technology (HIT) Manager on health and dental information systems and
technology projects and functions as well as quality improvement initiatives.
B. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Knowledge and understanding of Employee Handbook.
2. Carry out the meaning of the CSMD Mission and Vision statements.
3. Practice a culture of safety to reduce or prevent risk of injury, claims, loss, or liability by utilizing the
Risk Management and Infection Control Plan.
4. Perform responsibilities with a high-quality standard to yield improved compliance, quality, and patient
outcome measures by adhering to the Quality Improvement Plan.
5. Be present and ready for work as scheduled.
6. Attend in-service trainings, departmental meetings, and community events.
7. Work cohesively with team members.
8. Operates to infuse a culture of safety and high-quality standards.
9. Assists with the day-to-day management and operations of the health and dental information and
technology functions and projects.
a. Setups and maintains end-user accounts.
b. Trains end-users.
c. Collaborates with technical support (both internal and external) and vendors to improve and
optimize system performance and resolved high-level issues.
d. Collaborates with vendors to constructively implement and maximize utilization of information
systems.
e. Supports the implementation and/or maintenance of Electronic Medical Records, Electronic Dental
Records, and adjunct systems.
f. Serves as a resident expert, superuser and trainer of the Electronic Medical/Dental Records systems
and related adjunct systems.
g. Assists with developing reports.
h. Assists with the development and revision of policies and procedures.
i. Assists with developing recommendations on improving processes (i.e., workflow, operating
procedures, etc.).
j. Leads health/dental information initiatives, as applicable.
k. Protects patient privacy and keeps information confidential.
l. Assist with conducting audits and risk assessments.
10. Serves as backup for HIM.
11. Actively participates in Quality Management meetings, activities, and tasks.
12. Attends job related meetings, collaborations, and trainings; stays abreast of local and national
health/dental information and technology trends.

13. Maintains open communication with all team members.
14. Ensures adherence to organization, OSHA and other designated governing bodies related to workplace
safety.
15. Follows established federal, state, and local policies, procedures and programs relating to health and
safety in the workplace.
16. Any other job duties assigned by the Health Information & Technology (HIT) Manager.
C. REQUIREMENTS:
1. The candidate is required to have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Public Health, Health Care
Administration, Business Administration, Health Informatics, Information Systems, Mathematics,
Statistics, or other allied health field, preferably a Master's. Experience is not a substitute for a degree.
2. Strong computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel); project management software, Practice
Management System, Disease Registry or Electronic Health/Dental Record experience required.
3. Strong team based, results oriented, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
4. Working knowledge of health care and/or community or public health required. FQHC preferred.
5. Knowledge of healthcare laws, regulations, and standards.
6. Must have four or more related years of experience and/or training, preferably in a healthcare setting.
7. Travel to other CareSouth locations.
8. Experience collecting, monitoring and/or analyzing data and report building.
9. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
10. Must have the ability to organize, prioritize and work independently as well as schedule and produce
work in a timely manner.

3. Work is primarily sedentary. Large amounts of time may be spent using a PC and MIS application.
4. Lifting approximately 10-15 lbs, Pushing, Pulling - sometimes.
5. Stooping, Bending, Sitting, Standing - sometimes.
6. Walking- frequent; short distances.
7. Must be capable of standing on a step stool and reaching above head and shoulder area.
