Summary/Objective
The CNA-Surgery is an integral member of the surgical team, responsible for providing patient care during the peri-operative period. Provides direct and indirect patient care activities under the direction of the charge nurse. Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides for personal care, comfort and assists in the maintenance of a safe and clean environment for assigned patients. Ensures chart completion and chart entry for all patients each day. Scans any paper documentation into patient chart within 24 hours of patient visit
Core Responsibilities
Direct Patient Care Responsibilities:
- Assists in the preparation for admission of patients.
- Assists in and accompanies patients in the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
- Provides assistance with daily hygiene, dressing, and other general care as needed.
- Obtains and records vital signs, promptly reporting abnormalities to the charge nurse.
- Records intake/output and patient weight as directed.
- Recognizes and reports patient pain and needs.
- Assists with meal setup, feeding, and dietary needs.
- Ensures cleanliness of patient rooms and maintains a safe environment.
- Assists with patient mobility, positioning, and range of motion exercises.
- Observes and reports changes in skin condition or behavior.
- Anticipates and addresses patient needs.
General Patient Care Responsibilities:
- Assists patients with ambulation and uses gait belts appropriately.
- Completes assigned tasks per charge nurse direction.
- Maintains open communication with team members regarding patient status.
- Answers phones and assists with clerical duties as needed.
- Ensures proper infection control and patient safety measures are practiced.
- Provides dignity and comfort to terminal patients, including postmortem care.
- Responds promptly to call lights and patient requests.
- Reports any observed changes in patient condition or unusual incidents.
Indirect Patient/Resident Care Responsibilities:
- Cleans and maintains the OR break room and OR nurses station.
- Cleans discharged patient rooms and coordinates with housekeeping.
- Ensures a clean and comfortable patient environment.
- Prevents accidents or injuries by addressing hazards such as spills.
- Properly uses mechanical lifts as needed.
Supply and Equipment Management:
- Collaborates with surgical staff to maintain appropriate stock levels of supplies and equipment.
- Takes ownership of assigned specialty by monitoring PAR levels and initiating supply orders as needed.
- Reviews and updates worksheets/pick lists to reflect procedural changes.
- Assists the Circulator in ensuring accurate procedural charges are documented.
- Conducts routine checks on stock and non-stock specialty supplies, reporting supply issues to the Perioperative Services Manager.
Communication and Team Collaboration:
- Fosters a positive work environment and promotes teamwork.
- Completes clerical duties as necessary.
- Communicates effectively with team members to define role expectations and ensure seamless workflow.
- Keeps supervisors informed of status changes and procedural updates.
- Adapts to various patient care delivery models in clinical areas as needed.
- Resolves conflicts using proper communication channels and chain of command.
- Ensures accurate communication of lab data, surgical schedule changes, and physician messages to the appropriate personnel.
- Provides coverage for Surgical Scheduler as needed.
Instrument Processing and Sterilization:
- Cleans, lubricates, and inspects instruments after use, ensuring their integrity.
- Assembles instrument trays and prepares them for sterilization.
- Accurately labels all sterilization supplies and ensures proper documentation.
- Operates sterilizers and understands various sterilization and high-level disinfection methods.
- Assists in Sterile Processing as needed.

Work Environment
This job operates in a hospital setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital. This role may come in contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. There is risk of exposure to blood and bodily fluids, latex, and odors/chemicals. There is risk of exposure to unpredictable behavior from patients and families.
