SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Director of Memory Care (MC) is responsible for the active engagement of residents living with dementia. The purpose of the job is to:
- Create a daily flow of resident life that includes personal care, recreational and social activities.
- Lead focused and purpose-driven activities with the support of memory care specialists.
- Facilitate meaningful social interactions and roles, and help each resident feel a sense of belonging to a community.
- Ensure resident living spaces are optimized for the memory care environment.
- Involve resident family members and the community in the life of the campus.
- Train staff members in their memory care related roles.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Develops and oversees activity programing that addresses the needs, interests and abilities of all memory care residents.
- Assesses all residents individually and participates in the service planning process to formulate appropriate recreational and social activities and goals.
- Works with other leadership to train, supervise, and assist staff in the facilitation of memory care activities.
- Manages the I’M STILL HERE (ISH) program to ensure multiple activities are running between the hours of 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
- Oversees activity groups daily, supporting both the ISH Specialists and the medical team.
- Prepares and oversees activity schedules for all levels of memory care / ISH programming.
- Coordinates with health center staff for therapeutic interventions (OT/PT) to maximize resident participation in all activities.
- Develops a campus-wide volunteer program, to include recruiting, training, and organizing volunteers who supplement memory care activities.
- Includes resident family members and the Carillon community in memory care activities.
- Ensures appropriate interactions between residents and the surrounding community.
- Responsible for ensuring that the resident environment reflects the appropriate seasonal décor.
- Ensures opportunities for all residents to regularly engage in cognitive stimulation activities (Montessori, Serper Method, etc.).
- Incorporates cultural experiences on a regular basis (ie Artists for Alzheimer’s, music, etc.).
- Coordinates and conducts bi-monthly outings to cultural institutions (museums, concerts, etc.).
- Coordinates interactive events with the community (children’s groups, sports teams, etc.).
- Publicizes program activities in the monthly Carillon newsletter, social media platforms, and Carillon website.
- Conducts program familiarization sessions and memory care facility tours for family members of current and potential residents.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts a daily memory care team assessment in collaboration with the memory care nurse manager to ensure appropriate staffing for health care and program requirements.
- Inspects memory care facilities daily, and track maintenance work orders through completion.
- Manages the memory care program budget to ensure appropriate levels of staffing, resident services, and activity supplies and materials.
- Facilitates constructive resolution when resident family member or staff issues arise.
- Ensures that pertinent information is logged into the Carillon Communication Book.
- Communicates all pertinent information to the memory care team.
- Manages new resident administrative move-in processes.
- Facilitates consensus decisions regarding personnel and program matters.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy or related field is highly preferred. Preference will be given to those who have extensive experience with developing and managing programs for an Alzheimer’s or special needs population. Certification in dementia training and/or programming required within six months of employment. Must have current CPR and basic first aid certifications.
PERSONAL AND PUBLIC CONTACT
Director of Memory Care will have personal contact with all levels of Carillon staff, residents, resident family members, community, media and government agencies.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS
Must be able to work with others in setting up for events, including lifting, stooping, stretching, and using a step-stool or ladder. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. independently. Must be able to stand for at least half an hour. Must be able to walk a mile. Must be able to complete small program set-ups independently. Must be able to assist residents physically in boarding a bus, sitting, standing, and walking. Good visual and hearing acuity required. May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood, and body fluids that may contain HIV and/or HBV. May be exposed to cleaning chemicals and offensive odors.
EMPLOYMENT HOURS
Normal schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Must be willing to work occasional weekends/evenings to oversee program activities.
EQUIPMENT USED
Director of Memory Care will use the following equipment: computer programs to include Microsoft Office, personnel and scheduling software, social media, etc., copy machine, fax machine, telephone system, audio and visual aid equipment and various medical devices used for resident care.
OSHA TASK CATEGORY III
May be subjected to offensive odors and exposure to chronically ill and frail elderly. Must be free from communicable disease.
COMPLIANCE
Responsible for abiding by all Carillon policies and procedures to include the Code of Ethics and the principles and standards set forth for conducting the business and affairs of Carillon, Inc.

The MCP Director will be responsible for abiding by all Carillon policies and procedures relating to HIPAA.
