Job Responsibilities
- Performs routine histology tasks; embedding, cutting, cover slipping and other laboratory operations procedures.
- Responsible for the successful execution of laboratory protocols and standard operating procedures and undergoes training and routine competencies for applicable tasks completed within the department.
- Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens and ensures correct patient labeling by routinely verifying that case identification numbers match blocks and slides during each processing step; prints labels as appropriate.
- Documents in laboratory logs and the laboratory information system (LIS), as directed by standard operating procedures.
- Maintains laboratory equipment and ensures that the equipment is in proper working order and notifies leadership if maintenance and/or repairs are needed.
- Assists in the development of new protocols and standard operating procedures to address problems and improve quality and safety within the laboratory.
- Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support the laboratory, as required.
- If meets the applicable requirements, performs high complexity testing such as immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining, utilizing manual and automatic systems, including the preparation of antibodies and other solutions for testing.
- Accepts other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 6 years of microtomy experience in a Histology Laboratory.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Internet for business use.
- HT/HTL (ASCP) certification.
- AAS in Histotechnology or equivalent.
- A bachelor’s degree in a science related field from an accredited institution is strongly preferred.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-past, deadline driven environment.
- Strong willingness to learn and continuously improve. Passionate about new IHC findings, open minded to discover new options as optimization advances, enthusiastic and dedicated to meeting departmental objectives.
- Ability to work under routine and stressful situations in an accurate and timely manner.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures for biohazards and chemicals, as well as quality control procedures and regulations.
- Proficient in laboratory mathematics.
- Must possess ability to sit, stand, and/or work at a computer for long periods of time.
- May have exposure to blood-borne pathogens, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemical including formalin, formaldehyde, xylene, and DAB in the lab environment.
- Visual acuity and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail. Ability to pass a visual color discrimination test.
- Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.

- This position may require periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
