Job Description

Job Title : Surgical Technologist

Job Specialty : Surgery

Job Duration : 13 weeks

Shift : Day shift, 7 : 00 AM - 5 : 30 PM, on-call 1-2 nights per week and every 3rd weekend

Guaranteed Hours : 40 hours per week

Experience : Minimum of 1 year of surgical tech experience

License : Not specified

Certifications : BLS (American Heart Association), IDPH Fingerprinting

Must-Have :

  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Basic computer knowledge with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web browsing
  • Multicultural sensitivity
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in decision-making

Job Description :

  • Provide surgical technology support for direct and indirect care and service.
  • Assist surgeons and perform operative / invasive procedures while serving as a resource to other technologists.
  • Train new technologists and students, functioning as an informal lead technologist as needed.
  • Mentor peers and utilize additional education gained through certification to assist others, enhance efficiency, and improve performance.
  • Prepare for surgeon-specific operative / invasive procedures in a timely, accurate, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Ensure instruments, equipment, and suture are appropriate, complete, and functional.
  • Set up a sterile field and scrub prior to patient entry into the room.
  • Organize a back table and mayo for seamless transitions.
  • Use resources wisely, avoiding unnecessary openings.
  • Maintain fluid and non-redundant motions.
  • Meet acceptable setup time ranges for a variety of case types.
  • Be aware of and prepared for case needs.
  • Collaborate with surgeons prior to cases and make necessary adjustments.
  • Precept surgical technologists and RNs for surgeon-specific procedures.
  • Scrub for simple to complex procedures across various specialties.
  • Run Mayo independently and be aware of surgeons' techniques and preferences.
  • Adapt style to match surgeon and procedure needs.
  • Demonstrate confidence and competence during routine and emergency procedures.
  • Be prepared for sequence needs.
  • Anticipate and provide so that attention need not be diverted from the operative field.
  • Pay attention to subtle cues and respond appropriately.
  • Identify needs proactively to avoid delays.
  • Observe techniques and intervene appropriately when necessary.
  • Perform in first scrub, first assist, and second scrub roles.
  • Conduct case closing activities such as dressing application and turnover.
  • Teach RNs to scrub on various cases.
  • Plan, anticipate, and provide for both expected and unexpected intra-operative events.
  • Offer appropriate and timely intervention for intra-op case changes.
  • Maintain calm, confident, and steady actions and behavior during unexpected occurrences.
  • Observe for induction and maintain quiet environment.
  • Protect patient privacy and remind others to do the same.
  • Precept and mentor staff and students in surgical event planning.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills and job knowledge to enhance performance and teach others.
  • Be available for on-call hours outside of scheduled work hours, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Respond to on-call requests within the defined departmental time frame.
  • Communicate and collaborate with others, serving as a knowledge resource.
  • Conduct timely counts, understanding the dual responsibility with the circulating RN.
  • Communicate needs, distinguishing between urgent and routine matters.
  • Precept staff in an appropriate manner and mentor positively.
