Overview
The Operating Room Supervisor is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of the operating and procedural rooms. This leadership role involves monitoring and developing efficient daily workflows and staffing for the surgical area.
This position collaborates with the Pre/Post Supervisor/Coordinator, anesthesia, and supply chain management at the surgery center and across the health system to ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are available for all surgical cases.
The OR Supervisor provides direct support to staff and surgeons who are performing patient care and oversees the surgery center physician preference cards for new and existing surgeons.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and completes annual competency checklists for operating room staff.
- Serves as a role model and resource, assisting with yearly budgetary development and reviews productivity reports to ensure appropriate staffing levels based on benchmarks.
- Manages daily Kronos edits and is responsible for OR suite efficiencies, including on-time starts, in-room to incision times, room turnover times, and scheduled case duration accuracy.
- Reviews future surgery schedules to ensure appropriate equipment, supplies, and resources are available for all cases in collaboration with Inventory Coordinator and other staff as needed.
- Maintains a reasonable supply inventory and is responsible for staff and surgeon satisfaction in conjunction with OR efficiency and workflow.
- Facilitates smooth processes for every patient and participates in various committees, including ORVAT, Infection Control Committee, and Quality and Process Improvement Committee.
- In collaboration with the Manager, interviews and selects staff, provides input and recommendations on clinical ladders, promotions/demotions, progressive discipline, and staff participation in unit projects.
- Seeks input from surgeons and staff on capital equipment needs and provides input to the manager on capital purchase needs.
- Maintains constant communication with operating room staff, surgeons, anesthesia, SPD, and Pre/Post Op staff, completing routine rounding with staff, patients, and surgeons.
- Performs direct patient care duties as needed or a minimum of 2-3 days per month and supports the Manager in collecting information for accreditation surveys and departmental audits.
- Actively assists the Manager with implementing recommended changes or corrective action plans and manages vacation requests for operating room staff.
- Ensures adequate daily staffing and maintains a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and self, demonstrating awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level.
- Supports and enforces organizational standards and requirements, including compliance regulations, fire, safety/disaster programs, infection control practices, quality improvement programs, and policy and procedures.
- In conjunction with the Perioperative Educator, assures that orientees are provided with a preceptor to facilitate completion of the orientation guidelines and recommends staff development and identifies educational needs for all roles.
- Manages day-to-day operations of running the operating rooms and procedural rooms, including practice standards, staffing, and quality assurance, identifying daily staffing needs in accordance with budget and target guidelines.
- Proactively reviews future schedules (next day, three days, and one week in advance) to anticipate the need for staffing, equipment, and supply adjustments and manages and monitors schedules for changes.
- Ability to assess needs of specialized operating room equipment and supplies for all cases and ability to update and organize surgeon preference cards in collaboration with Service Line Coordinators.
