Position Overview
The Library Evening Supervisor and Course Reserves Specialist has primary responsibility for managing evening and weekend library operations. This position serves as the professional staff point of contact during evening and weekend hours and is responsible for the safety and security of those using the building as well as security of the library collection.
Additionally, this position works under the direction of the Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Specialist to ensure course reserves operations serve students and faculty by enabling a large number of people to use a limited amount of materials. Responsibilities of the position include faculty outreach and education regarding Course Reserves policy and procedures, processing Course Reserves requests, and assisting faculty use of LibraryLink (Leganto). This position also serves as backup to the Access Services Specialist and the Interlibrary Loan Specialist, helping ensure seamless library services throughout the year.
Carleton College Library is a member of the Bridge Consortium, a collaboration with the St. Olaf Libraries. As a member, the Evening Supervisor and Course Reserves Specialist work switch peers at both libraries on Bridge-related projects.
Working Schedule
The expected starting hourly range for this position is between $25.00 and $26.40. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

- Typical work hours for this position will consist of Saturday - Wednesday evenings from 3pm - 12pm during Fall, Winter and Spring terms and 8am - 5pm when classes are not in session.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
Library Evening Supervisor:
- Provide circulation services to library patrons including borrowing, renewal, and return of library materials and loanable technology; processing local, consortial, and interlibrary loan requests; assistance with course reserves, textbook, and other circulation desk held collections; assistance with use of technology equipment (e.g., microfilm, printers, and scanners); stack maintenance; and assistance with library space.
- Supervise the physical environment of the library’s circulation desk and public spaces.
- Coordinate and direct the work of student employees and support them in maintaining library services and standards. Assign and perform tasks associated with circulation of library materials and maintenance of stacks.
- Work with the Head of Access Services and Technology to execute a continuous stack reading and inventory process.
- Assist with moving, shelving and processing physical items.
- Assist in supporting and training student employees.
- Explain loan rules, policies, fines, and patron records.
- Maintain communication with other Access Services staff and Gould Library staff. Report problems encountered during shifts so appropriate action may be taken.
- Supervise library closing to maintain security of the library collection when the building is closed.
- Processing of interlibrary loan requests in the evenings and on weekends.
- Set-up and provide support for evening and weekend library events.
- Promote culturally responsive and inclusive access services operation and environment. Support flexible service delivery modalities that enhance access and equitable student outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned
- Ensure timely course reserves processing, coordinating effectively with faculty, library staff, and student employees as needed
- Explain and interpret course reserve policies and procedures to faculty, staff, and students
- Assist faculty with use of LibraryLink (Leganto).
- Monitor overdue reserves reports
- Update and maintain procedure manual for the Course Reserves operations
- Other duties as assigned
- Will be supervised by the Head of Access Services
- Work direction related to course Reserves responsibilities will be provided by the Interlibrary Loan and Reserves Specialist
- Will be primary supervisor for 10-15 student workers
Required Qualifications:
- Four-year degree or equivalent experience working in a library setting
- Excellent communication and public relations skills with a helpful service-oriented approach.
- Flexibility, enthusiasm, and ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff, and the general public.
- Technological proficiency with demonstrated aptitude for learning new software and systems.
- Supervisory experience.
- Ability to frequently lift 20 or more pounds.
- Ability to use discretion and judgment in a variety of situations.
- Ability to handle stress and emergency situations.
- Must be dependable and attentive to detail and accuracy.
- Flexibility, enthusiasm, and ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, and the general public.
- Willingness to adapt to a rapidly changing environment and eagerness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at Carleton and at St. Olaf College.
- Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program
- Familiarity with principles and practices of academic library access services operations
- Familiarity with Ex Libris Alma/Primo integrated library system, Illiad Interlibrary Loan, Moodle and Leganto
