Position Overview
This is a full time (1.0 FTE) union represented position. The Maintenance Engineer will diagnose, repair and maintain HVAC, refrigeration, temperature control, pumps, air compressors, food service equipment and associated components of these systems. The Maintenance Engineer will also assist other Maintenance Department personnel as directed. This individual will report to the Maintenance Manager. This position requires continuous education to further educate and support this position.
Union Salary and Benefits: The full-scale wage for the Maintenance Engineer I position is $38.86 per hour. New employees will be hired with a one-year training period. At the start of the training period, wages are reduced by $2.00 per hour from the base classification rates. Employees will receive a $1.00 per hour increase after six months, and another $1.00 per hour increase after twelve months.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
- Inspect, adjust, repair, and maintain ventilation and air conditioning equipment; including air handling units (AHU’s), pumps, chillers, fan coil units, heat pumps, air conditioners, DX units, pneumatic/ DDC/electric control systems, exhaust fans, etc.
- Inspect, adjust, repair, and maintain a variety of heating systems and their components; including hot water, steam, forced air which utilize natural gas and propane fuels, pumps, coils, heat exchangers, thermostats, control systems, condensate tanks, etc.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment maintained under the College’s preventive maintenance system.
- Inspect, adjust, repair, and maintain all types of food service equipment; including gas, steam, and electrically powered food service equipment, ware-washing equipment, and refrigeration equipment.
- Direct the activities of student workers assigned to the Maintenance Engineer position.
- Assisting with plumbing repairs as needed.
Education/Experience/ Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to diagnose, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment, pneumatic temperature control equipment, pumps, air compressors, refrigeration systems, ice-making equipment, food service equipment, and associated components of these systems.
- Post-secondary certificate in a building maintenance related field.
- Required to be Universal CFC Certified.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill using a variety of diagnostic equipment; including a volt/ohm/ampere meter, refrigerant manifold gauge, air velocity, pressure meter, and air-monitoring tools.
- Working knowledge of computer based energy management and programmed maintenance systems.
- Welding and metal fabrication skills required.
- Able to work independently; self-starter.
- A positive, cooperative service oriented attitude.
- A valid Minnesota driver’s license with a good record (subject to verification).
- Neat and safe work habits.
- Must pass a background check.
- A Minnesota Grade C operating engineer’s license strongly desired.
- Experience working with food service equipment.
- Experience with residential systems installation and repair.
- Must pass pre-employment physical
- Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100# of force occasionally, 50# of force frequently, and 20# of force constantly.
- Will work with and/or be exposed to chemicals and mechanical devices.
- Will work within confined spaces and/or areas with dust or fumes.
- Will work on roof tops and be required to work at elevations with a mechanical lift or ladder.
- Work hours may vary.
- Will work in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, as well as in inclement weather.
