Northfield, MN Full Time
POSTED ON 3/2/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/26/2025

Carleton College, Department of Religion and Program of Africana Studies, seeks qualified candidates for a three-year postdoctoral position in African-American religious thought and experience, to begin September 1, 2025. A Ph.D. in Religion and / or Africana Studies is preferred, but other relevant fields will be considered. ABDs will also be considered (with an appropriate adjustment to the position's title). The appointment involves half-time research and writing, and half-time teaching (2-3 courses per year, with 8 total courses over the three-year appointment). Candidates should be prepared to teach one introductory course in Africana Studies each year, as well as middle-division courses in Religion and Africana Studies, with the possibility of also teaching an upper-level seminar. While candidates who specialize in African-American religions are preferred, we welcome applications from those who can also teach about broader Africana religious experience.

Carleton College is committed to expanding the foundation of the Africana Studies Program in collaboration with the Department of Religion, and sees this position as a step in that direction. We are dedicated to developing our faculty to better reflect the diversity of our student body and American society. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, please visit the Carleton College website go.carleton.edu / carletonjobs and submit an application that includes a cover letter, a c.v. with names of three references, two sample syllabi, and a statement about teaching students from diverse backgrounds in an undergraduate, residential liberal arts environment. Applications received by December 1, 2024 are assured of full consideration. After applicants pass an initial screening process, referees may receive requests for letters; at least one letter should specifically address the candidate's teaching experience and potential. Preliminary interviews will be conducted over Zoom. Please send inquiries to Kristin Bloomer, Chair, Department of Religion (kbloomer@carleton.edu) and / or Chielo Eze, Director, Africana Studies Program (ceze@carleton.edu), Carleton College, Northfield, MN.
