The Department:

You will join a nationally accredited agency (one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) amongst a team dedicated to upholding the department's mission to promote community health and wellness while building a diverse culture that embraces change and continuous improvement.

The Position: 

The most senior level in the Recreation Leader job family. Positions generally require specialist knowledge for large high-profile events and/ or programs. Incumbents work independently, with little supervision. Assignments are complex in nature and require the proven ability to coordinate events or programs associated with a specific area of responsibility.

This recruitment is intended to fill a position at the Carlsbad Senior Center to coordinate volunteer-led classes and programs. The Coordinator will oversee instructor communication and scheduling and assist with marketing and outreach efforts. Experience working with the public, particularly seniors, is strongly recommended.



The Department: The Carlsbad Parks & Recreation Department is nationally accredited (and one of only five agencies in the State of California) by the Commission for the Accreditation of Parks & Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). The department is the steward of approximately 450 acres of parkland, featuring community and historic parks, senior services, playgrounds, multigenerational facilities, aquatic centers, tennis courts, and multi-use fields. Nearly 40 percent of the city is dedicated to open space, and the department maintains approximately 40 linear miles of recreational trails.
 Coordinates and administers assigned program, including but not limited to writing and managing grants; analyzing funding sources and monitoring program funds
  • Coordinates related projects to ensure that the goals and objectives of the assigned program are met by performing the duties personally or through other team members or by supervising employees
  • Ensures current program compliance with all state and federal government regulations and supports appropriate actions to meet deadlines
  • Recommends and suggests guidelines and procedures for the assigned program
  • Recruit, train and schedule volunteers and/or staff members for programs

Qualifications/Knowledge of:

  • Methods, processes, and procedures used in recreation programming
  • Professional communication techniques, both oral and in writing
  • Organizational strategies
  • Principles of leading staff and volunteers
  • Safe work practices
  • Public relations, marketing practices, and community outreach

Ability to:

  • Effectively organize and schedule programs
  • Use computers and related software applications
  • Manage programs and projects, including monitoring resources and results
  • Communicate well with others, including interaction with coworkers, supervisor, and the public
  • Navigate assignments and make course corrections in current and future program coordination

Any combination of experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • College-level courses in recreation, education, or related field, preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of experience and/or training performing duties comparable to a Senior Recreation Leader
  • Experience working with the public

 

*Part-time employee cannot exceed 1,000 total hours worked within one fiscal year*
