Position Details
This is an open and promotional recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill vacant positions for the 2024 - 2025 school year.
This is an open and promotional recruitment to fill current openings and to establish an eligibility list for a period of one year, or until depleted. The candidates achieving the top three ranks of the eligibility list will be referred for the final selection interview along with any transfer or reinstatement candidates.
Typical assignments will work 6.5 hours per day, 208 days per year.
The recruitment process will consist of a training and experience examination and a structured interview.
BASIC FUNCTION :
Under the direction of an assigned administrator, lead and participate in food service operations and activities at an assigned school site including the preparation, serving, distribution and selling of food items to meet student and staff needs; oversee related inventory, cashiering and sanitation functions; train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned personnel.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS :
The Nutrition Services Lead-I leads and participates in food service operations and activities at an assigned elementary school or academy site. Incumbents are responsible for providing work direction to a small crew. The Nutrition Services Lead-II oversees food service operations at a middle school site. Incumbents serve as a lead over a larger work crew and have responsibility for more diverse menu options.
Essential Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
Lead and participate in food service operations and activities at an assigned school site including the preparation, serving, distribution and selling of food items to meet student and staff needs; assure related activities comply with established standards, policies and procedures.
Oversee and participate in the preparation and heating of breakfast, lunch and snack items; assemble various ingredients; heat, package and wrap food items according to established procedures and portion control standards; observe and assure proper quality, quantity and temperature of food.
Train and provide work direction and guidance to assigned personnel; assign employee duties and review work to assure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established standards, requirements and procedures; provide input concerning employee evaluations as requested.
Monitor inventory levels of food items and service supplies; estimate, order and assure adequate inventory levels of food items and supplies; prepare requisitions; receive and verify accuracy of food and supply deliveries; assure proper storage and rotation of food items; conduct meal counts.
Lead and participate in activities to assure food service facilities, equipment and utensils are maintained in a clean and sanitary condition; inspect and review food preparation and serving areas to assure compliance with established health, safety and sanitary standards and regulations.
Open, set up and close the kitchen and service areas; oversee the preparation of food and beverages for sale; assure proper counting and set-up of plates, trays and utensils; distribute meals to students and staff; oversee and participate in the stocking of condiments, food items and paper goods.
Oversee and participate in food service cashiering activities; count money and make correct change; prepare, set up, balance and account for cash drawers; prepare and distribute bank deposits; operate a point of sale (POS) terminal; maintain, balance, reconcile and update student and staff food accounts as assigned.
Prepare and maintain a variety of records, logs and reports related to sales, meal counts, menu production, deposits, inventory, orders, sanitation and assigned activities.
Lead and participate in cleaning serving areas, counters, tables, food containers and food service equipment; wash dishes, trays, plates, pots, pans, utensils and other serving equipment.
Communicate with students, staff and various outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns; prepare, distribute and respond to various correspondence.
Operate standard food service equipment such as ovens, warmers and food carts; turn equipment on and off; utilize a computer and assigned software as required.
Lock and unlock facility doors as required; turn on and off lights, ovens, warmers and other kitchen equipment.

Entrance Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :
Any combination equivalent to : graduation from high school and two years increasingly responsible experience in quantity food preparation including work with inventory and cashiering functions.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS :
Valid Food Service Manager Training Certificate.

Pay Increases : New classified employees are typically placed on the first step of the assigned salary range. Step increases occur annually until Step 5 is reached, after which longevity steps are allocated in accordance with years of service.
Benefits : Employees working 4 hours per day or more will be provided an option of Anthem Blue Cross HMO or Kaiser health benefits, as well as Delta Dental and EyeMed Vision benefits; employee contribution amounts are shared with the District and vary depending on number of hours worked per day. Retirement : Retirement : Employees working 4 or more hours per day and those already contributing to CalPERS will be automatically enrolled into CalPERS upon hire. The District's CalPERS formula is 2% at 55 for employees enrolled with CalPERS prior to 12 / 31 / 2012 and 2% at 62 for employees who have already or will enroll into CalPERS as of 01 / 01 / 2013 or afterward. Employees working less than 4 hours per day will be included in an alternative retirement plan based on the use of pretax contributions.
