Position Summary:
The Certified Nursing Assistant position provides quality nursing care to residents, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with the facilities policies and procedures. The quality of care provided is to be in an environment that promotes the residents rights, dignity, and individuality and pertinent information is to be reported to the immediate supervisor.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Provide quality nursing care to residents in an environment that promotes their rights, dignity, freedom of choice and individuality.
2. Maintain knowledge of the individualized care plan for residents, and provides support to the residents according to their care plan. Contributes to the care plan process by providing the charge nurse or other care planning staff with specific information and observations of the residents’ needs and preferences.
3. Attends to the individual needs of the residents, which may include assistance with grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinent care, toileting, transferring, communicating, or other needs in keeping with the individuals’ care requirements.
4. Maintains the comfort, privacy and dignity of residents and interacts with them in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring environment.
5. Fully understands all aspects of residents’ rights, including the right to be free of abuse. Also responsible for promptly reporting to the charge nurse or administrative staff incidents or evidence of resident abuse or violation of residents’ rights.
6. Assists in maintaining a safe, neat and clean environment; reports environmental deficiencies to the charge nurse.
7. Feed and/or assist residents with meals. Chart appetite carefully and offer substitutes with necessary.
8. Apply safety devices when ordered and ensure call lights are always within reach.
9. Respect the residents’ privacy by knocking before entering room, addressing them by name, introducing yourself, and providing privacy during care.
Qualifications
• Good organizational and customer service skills
• Valid Certified Nursing Assistant Certification
• Desire to work with older adults
10. Protects the personal belongings of each resident including eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, furnishings, jewelry, clothing, etc. Promptly reports missing items according to established policy and participates in efforts to locate missing items.
11. Observes residents for changes in condition or behavior and promptly reports these changes to appropriate licensed nursing personnel.
12. Provides care that maintains each resident’s skin integrity to prevent pressure ulcers, skin tears and other damage by changing incontinent residents, turning, repositioning immobile residents and by applying moisturizers to fragile skin or other areas.
13. Answers residents’ call lights promptly and courteously.
14. Performs various tasks assigned by the charge nurse, including checking vital signs, weighing residents, bathing, etc.
15. Lifts, moves and transports residents, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices.
16. Assists and escorts to the beauty shop, activities, and so forth.
17. Performs all job responsibilities in accordance with prescribed safety and infection control procedures, including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated and proper disposal of soiled materials.
18. Communicates and interacts effectively and tactfully with the residents, visitors, families, coworkers, and supervisors.
19. Observe all facility safety policies and procedures.
20. Observe infection control procedures.
21. Follow Residents Rights policies at all times.
22. Consistently present yourself to work with an appropriate, professional appearance.
23. Consistently work cooperatively with residents, residents’ representatives, facility staff, physicians, consultants, and ancillary service providers.
24. Perform all duties assigned in an effective, cooperative, timely and professional manner.
Physical Job Requirements:
To fulfill job requirements, the employee must be able to perform key physical tasks for extended periods of time. When supporting, lifting or transferring residents, proper body mechanics and safety measures as prescribed by the facility must be used.
In a typical day, employee must be able to:
1. Stand/walk up to eight hours a day
2. Sit up to four hours a day
3. Frequently support up to 50 pounds
4. Occasionally lift/carry up to 30 pounds
5. Frequently kneel, bend, and reach
6. Readily respond to emergent situations
