JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: Lifeguard
DEPARTMENT: Aquatics
REPORTS TO: CSA Directors
FLSA: Part-time, non-exempt
GENERAL SUMMARY: Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in harmony with the mission statement and policies of the Carmel Swim Academy.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Individuals in this job will be subject to loud, humid and wet working conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Individuals considered for this job at some point will have to show us their swimming skills and rescue skills.
- Individuals in this job must be at least 15 years of age
- Exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making
- Relate to people in a positive, but firm manner
- Be observant; safety conscious; react calmly and quickly in an emergency
- Effectively communicate information of Carmel Swim Academy programs to patrons
- Be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and have full range of body movement
- Starguard Elite Lifeguard Certification preferred, CPR for the professional rescuer, First Aid, and AED certifications or any other nationally recognized certifications (Ellis, Red Cross, YMCA). Crossing over to StarGuard Elite lifeguarding can be provided.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas.
- Prevent accidents by scanning the assigned zone from bottom to top and covering the zone in compliance with the 10/20 rule.
- Enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness.
- Respond to emergency situations in accordance with Carmel Swim Academy policies and procedures.
- Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Maintain records as required.
- Perform routine maintenance of the pool, locker rooms and surrounding areas, to ensure cleanliness.
- Check pool and rescue equipment and promptly report any problems.
- Set up and put away equipment for recreational swims.
- Develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with patrons and other staff.
- Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service training are mandatory.
- Work scheduled shifts.
- Set up and tear down competition if working at high school.
- Other duties may be assigned to this position at the discretion of the Directors or Swim Coaches.
