Job Summary: The Library Services Supervisor – Adult actively participates as a member of management groups to effect change, implements strategies related to Adult Services and contributes to the long and short-range direction of the Library. The Library Services Supervisor – Adult motivates, supervises and evaluates assigned staff, oversees and refines complex processes, anticipates and advocates for community needs while keeping a system-wide perspective, serves as liaison with internal departments to achieve strategic goals and represents CLP during engagement with the community.
Under the direction of a Library Services Manager, the Library Services Supervisor – Adults engages the community around programs and services for patrons 18 years of age and older. They interact directly with organizations and individual learners, readers and researchers in and outside the library, as well as online and in-person. The Library Services Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operation of a department within a location and manages day-to-day location functions under the direction of the Library Services Manager. A Library Services Supervisor – Adult is a highly motivated and energetic person with a deep knowledge of their age group and the resources available to provide services that meet their needs.
Location: CLP-Downtown, Pittsburgh, PA.
Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week; days, evenings and weekends required.
Compensation: $59,000 annually

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Understanding, advocating for and engaging with their community (i.e. library service area or interest area) to ensure the needs identified are addressed through relevant programs and services; and building their communities through meaningful interactions between the library and its community and among community members via the library;
- Modeling librarianship for their peers and developing skills and abilities of less experienced staff through coaching, learning opportunities, direct and indirect work assignments, building and extending trust, and empowering staff to work to the top of their classifications to achieve the library’s goals;
- Leadership and participation in system-wide activities, such as committees, teams and modeling behaviors in patron-focused service, self-directed learning, strategic thinking and planning, and personal accountability;
- Evaluating the success of their efforts and continuously improving programs and services to respond to changing needs through data collection and analysis; and contributing to the vision of a future-focused library;
- Engage staff and public stakeholders by seeking input in project design and outcomes;
- Prepare written and statistical reports;
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Identify and respond to the needs of the Adult community within the context of system-wide needs using virtual and in-person methods;
- Engage and collaborate effectively with a diverse public, peers, and staff;
- Represent CLP to the community as it relates to Adult services;
- Communicate positively, professionally and effectively; both written and verbal;
- Lead, motivate and develop staff and volunteers;
- Demonstrate leadership skills, including the ability to identify and resolve problems;
- Develop advanced knowledge of CLP policies and practices, trends in library science and services;
- Serve as a leader and mentor among Librarians and Library Assistants;
- Interpret and implement policy to staff, customers and community; consistently search for any updates to policies as they evolve;
- Engage staff regarding CLP’s strategic directions and facilitate effective communication among staff, as necessary;
- Contribute to developing and achieving goals and objectives related to CLP’s Strategic Plan;
- Prioritize tasks in an effective manner to ensure CLP’s goals and objectives are met;
- Contribute to the understanding of the needs for resources for staffing, facilities and collections/content
- Make decisions for the betterment of CLP and location/department using independent judgment and understanding of CLP’s strategic directions;
- Learn, competently use, and demonstrate technology in all forms.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university;
- Three or more years of progressive experience and increasing responsibility in a public library, including demonstrated leadership;
- Previous experience in a supervisory role, supporting and coaching staff.
Physical and Clearance Requirements:
- Physical ability to bend, stoop, stand and/or sit for long periods of time, push heavy book trucks, and lift heavy loads (frequently up to 20 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs);
- Ability to travel locally, regionally and nationally as required;
- Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License (or ability to obtain in reasonable time) and access to a vehicle needed occasionally, depending on responsibilities;
- PA State Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, FBI Fingerprint Criminal Records Check and Mandated Reporter Training upon offer of employment.
