Job Summary: The Manager - Major Gifts and Planned Giving leads efforts to raise funds from individuals interested in and capable of making Major Gifts and Planned Giving to support Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s mission of fostering literacy, enabling exploration, and creating connections with all of our neighbors. The Manager will develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive gift planning and donor relations program that supports Library operations, transformational projects, capital needs, and the endowment.
The Manager – Major Gifts and Planned Giving reports to the Director of Development and works collaboratively across the Library system, including with the Development Team, the President’s Office, and the Communication and Creative Services Department to identify, qualify, cultivate and steward donors.
Location: CLP-East Liberty, Pittsburgh, PA.
Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday
Compensation: $65,000-$70,000/year

Essential Functions
- Designs and implements the Library’s major gifts and planned giving programs in order to match the organization’s programmatic and financial goals with the philanthropic intent of prospective and current donors;
- Develops and executes an annual work plan that represents all aspects of the donor cycle, including donor research and identification, creative solicitation and stewardship strategies, accurate and appropriate donor recognition, and programs like the annual Library Circle event. Stewardship and cultivation plans will strategically use all communication and event channels available;
- Solicits outright gifts, life-income gifts, and estate gifts with a focus on strategic, thoughtful, and ethical fundraising;
- Leverages the relationships, skills, and knowledge of the Library’s staff, President & Director, Board members, and volunteers for philanthropic purposes;
- Adherence to the Library’s mission, vision, and values are the utmost priority when developing relationships with donors;
- Works closely with the Director of Development and Department Managers to develop strategies for moving supporters up the donor continuum, preparing them for higher annual and major gifts; and closely collaborates with colleagues on strategies and activities related to individual giving, including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, to ensure a quality and engaging donor experience;
- Maintains accurate and useful records of their work in Raiser’s Edge and in donor files;
- Generates and shares reports internally and externally that provide compelling information about the work of the Library and the impact of donors’ gifts;
- Oversees creation of communication for major and planned giving audiences. Works closely with Development staff and the Department of Communications and Creative Services (CCS) to create and implement an annual communication and promotional plan for Major Gifts and Planned Giving including, but not limited to, donor newsletters, appeals, web pages and special campaigns;
- Ensures that communications include donor-centered messaging so donors and prospects have a better understanding of how philanthropy supports the Library and how their gifts have an impact in our community;
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Knowledge and aptitude in areas of major gifts and planned giving; proven history of closing gifts preferred;
- Innate curiosity and interest in learning;
- Proficient in problem solving and demonstrates good judgement; capable of acting with discretion and protecting donor privacy;
- Excellent interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to work effectively with donors, professional consultants, volunteers, and staff;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
- Retains a high level of motivation and confidence and the ability to be resilient and adaptable in a changing environment;
- Shows a commitment to ongoing professional development and staying up to date with fundraising best practices;
- Proficiency with MS Office software, especially Word and Excel.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field;
- Five years of related experience with progressive responsibility for donor cultivation and solicitation; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with nonprofit organizations, especially in the education, literacy, or arts & culture fields, is highly valued.
