Description

The Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy and Technology (CMIST) is Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) home for Political Science and International Relations. CMIST is devoted to the wise development, use and governance of new and emerging technologies that are changing the national and international security landscape. In addition, CMIST has a dynamic sub-specialty in Amerian politics and law, including research projects, an undergraduate major, and a growing teaching interest.

CMIST seeks highly qualified candidates who can deliver excellent instruction and curriculum development in American politics and law, while also making an active research contribution either in their own field or in the study of pedagogy. An intersecting teaching interest in the role of technology is an added plus. Candidates must have a PhD or a terminal degree (such as a JD) in Political Science, Law, or a related discipline, by the start of the appointment. Prior professional experience in this field will also be considered; but successful candidates must have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.

CMIST teaching track faculty members teach the equivalent of four courses per academic year (typically two semester-long courses per term) and engage in other instructional activities such as supervising graduate and undergraduate research. While this is not a tenure-line position, candidates should note that the position has a teaching course load equivalent to that of many tenure-line positions elsewhere.

The Teaching Track at CMU is a career-oriented, non-tenure faculty track with renewable fixed terms and opportunities for promotion from Assistant Teaching Professor to full Teaching Professor. Although this position emphasizes teaching, curriculum development, and supervising student projects, it also offers significant opportunities to engage in research independently. CMU values teaching and provides excellent resources to help you develop, implement, and assess educational innovations. Evidence of demonstrable professional growth during the term of appointment, including active contributions to research, publication of educational materials, or engagement in the professional community, is also considered in the reappointment process.

Carnegie Mellon University

Formally established in 1967, CMU is a dynamic R1 institution that has an exceptional impact on the world. Despite its relative youth, Carnegie Mellon consistently ranks in the top 25 US national universities. CMU is a global, research-intensive university with more than 14,000 students, more than 110,000 living alumni, approximately 5,000 faculty and staff, and over 100 research centers. It is a place of creativity, entrepreneurship, pragmatism, and ambition, with a tradition of strategically focusing its efforts and resources in areas where it can lead, then pursuing those areas with startling intensity. The research and teaching initiative in CMIST is just such a strategic undertaking.

Carnegie Mellon University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions. Carnegie Mellon welcomes faculty applicants who will contribute to this diversity through their research, teaching and service, including women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, individuals with disabilities, and others who would contribute in different ways. Carnegie Mellon University seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) that assists with dual-career searches.
