What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Supervisor - Physics Department - Mellon College of Science (MCS) position at Carnegie Mellon University?
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) group in the Physics Department is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to play a key role in detector development for high-energy physics experiments. We are looking for a team member who can effectively interact with a diverse range of internal and external partners while maintaining a high level of integrity.
Core responsibilities will include:
Coordinate and schedule work for the CMS group, ensuring assignments are distributed properly and resources are available. Also manage project activities, including cost, methods, and employee performance.
Assure that the laboratory technicians are accurately trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and equipment-specific requirements.
Administer and coordinate the technical activities, related to the operation of the CMS laboratory.
Develop, implement, and manage laboratory(s) policies and procedures. coordinate with research staff on issues that impact laboratory services.
Maintain quality checks on the safety of laboratories, including biohazards and ensure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices.
You should demonstrate:
The ability to complete tasks within specified timeframes, adapt to changing circumstances, and manage interruptions effectively.
Strong attention to detail, with the ability to keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.
The ability to prioritize work and balance multiple tasks simultaneously.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate close collaboration with project personnel and students at CMU, as well as other U.S. and/or international institutions.
Self-motivation and a positive, professional approach.
You should have or be willing to gain:
Proficiency in using various fabrication equipment.
Experience in crafting and manufacturing fixtures/jigs for exceptional small-batch parts.
Familiarity with CAD software and CAM software.
Experience in crafting components for fabrication and/or manufacturing.
Skill in using hand tools and measuring instruments.
Familiarity with general machine shop equipment and practices.
A strong interest in and a learning orientation towards advanced manufacturing technologies and processes.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree is required
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
At least 3 years of laboratory/technical work experience.
Experience in programming, operating, and maintaining CNC equipment is a plus.
