The Department of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to study epigenetic mechanisms of host-microbial interactions in the laboratory of Dr. Zheng Kuang (https://labs.bio.cmu.edu/kuang).
Trillions of different microorganisms reside in our gut, known as the gut microbiota. The goal of our research is to identify the molecular basis of interactions between the microbiota and the circadian rhythms in mammalian metabolism and immunity. We use various techniques including genomics, gnotobiotics, laser capture microscopy and mouse genetics to study the transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms by which the gut microbiota impacts host circadian rhythms. We are currently focused on understanding how these signals integrate in the gut to regulate (1) energy uptake and metabolic homeostasis; (2) innate immunity and pathogen infection. We are also very interested in developing new methods to delve deeper into the functions of gut microbiota.
Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (PhD and/or MD) or are scheduled to receive a doctoral degree very soon in biological sciences or related fields. Experience in genomics, molecular genetics, metabolism, microbiology, and/or immunology is recommended.

Dr. Kuang received his PhD degree from Johns Hopkins University and his postdoctoral training at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Kuang is currently an Eberly Family Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University and an NIH Director's New Innovator Awardee. His research is supported by the NIH, Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, Shurl and Curci Foundation and generous startup fund from Carnegie Mellon University.
