Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College is searching for a Research Associate to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment.

We are seeking someone with a strong interest in linguistics and speech. The ideal candidate will have an education that focuses on linguistics, speech therapy, and/or the humanities.

This role will work with TalkBank at https://talkbank.org. TalkBank is the largest open-access database for the study of spoken language usage, development, and disorders. The language corpora in TalkBank have been contributed by hundreds of research projects from around the world.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Use of TalkBank editing and analysis software to prepare spoken language transcripts for inclusion in TalkBank
  • Curating and transcribing new contributions to the database
  • Identifies problems and obstacles to progress; develops strategies to solve problems.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with preference for degrees in linguistics, speech therapy, and/or other related communications and humanities fields.
  • 1-3 years of research related experience required
  • Interest in linguistics, speech therapy and communication is vital
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity. Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
