Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute is searching for a Technician II to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment.

We are seeking creative and upbeat Technician II that will operate, maintain, repair and modify a wide variety of computer, electric, electronic and other equipment used in instructional, research and laboratory experiments and projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and operate the knitting machines, knitting frames, looms, CNC sewing machines, and other machines in the textile's lab; including any new textiles machines that may be acquired.

  • Provide textiles expertise to researchers and students; including pattern design and fabrication help to further research project goals.

  • Produce documentation and tutorials to assist novice users in machine use.

  • Calibrates, maintains and operates a wide variety of control, measuring and recording equipment used to test and evaluate electronic systems equipment, in particular for instructional and research purposes.

  • Demonstrates and assists students, faculty and research staff members in the operation and potential uses of electronic test equipment as well as with the design, performance requirements, use and capabilities of instructional and other equipment. Assists students with assignments or projects, as needed.

  • Following supervisory instruction and based on blueprints and diagrams, may layout and construct or modify commercially unavailable equipment to be used in research or instructional projects. May operate machine tools to fabricate non-procurable items required to construct equipment.

  • Maintain and operate the knitting machines, knitting frames, looms, CNC sewing machines, and other machines in the textiles' lab; including any new textiles machines that may be acquired.

  • May maintain various records and files regarding such things as time and materials spent on projects, maintenance schedules, vendor information and service information and manuals.

  • May monitor the stock of materials necessary for the repair and construction of equipment and reorder materials as necessary.

  • May operate and maintain other types of departmental equipment such as printers, copiers, photographic or audio-visual equipment.

  • Produce documentation and tutorials to assist novice users in machine use.

  • Provide textiles expertise to researchers and students; including pattern design and fabrication help to further research project goals.

  • Sets up and operates equipment necessary for student seminars and laboratory sessions.

  • Tests experimental and instructional equipment and machinery such as computer peripherals, interface modules and electronic balances for normal operation. Following instruction, repairs or replaces parts as necessary.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Associates Degree

  • 1-3 years of relevant work experience

Training:

  • OSHA Hazardous Materials Safety Training
