Description

The Lane Fellow Program recognizes and supports scientists of outstanding intellect who are dedicated to a career at the interface of computational and biological sciences so that they can pursue postdoctoral research in the rich computational environment at Carnegie Mellon. It is named in honor of Ray and Stephanie Lane, whose generous donation enabled the creation of the original Lane Center for Computational Biology, the forerunner of the Computational Biology Department. Absent special circumstances, applicants must have received their doctoral degree after August 1, 2023 or be expected to receive their degree by August 1, 2024. Candidates who have done prior Ph.D. or postdoctoral work at Carnegie Mellon are not normally considered.

Applications received by March 1, 2024 will receive full consideration, but those received at other times may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Candidates should submit their Curriculum Vitae; a statement of research that describes the significance of their past work, their qualifications for interdisciplinary work, and their future interests and career goals; and the names and email addresses of two or more individuals whom the applicant has asked to provide letters of reference (it is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the letters are sent). All materials should be submitted here.

After initial review, some applicants will be chosen as finalists and invited to interview in person or via telephone. As part of this process, finalists will be responsible for identifying a Computational Biology faculty member who is willing to serve as their research advisor. Over the course of their fellowship, fellows are expected and encouraged to transition to independence by developing their own research program to take with them when they become independent investigators.

Lane Fellows will be selected for a three-year appointment beginning approximately August 1, 2024. They will receive a stipend of $65,000, benefits including medical, dental, vision and life insurance, and a professional support allocation of $3,000 to cover items such as purchase of a laptop computer, travel to conferences, membership in relevant professional societies, and journal subscriptions.
