OVERVIEW - The Spill Technician I is an entry-level position designed for inexperienced apprentices who are hired to learn Emergency Spill Response. The position requires an energetic and enthusiastic individual who has the ability to meet physical requirements, follow instructions, observe and learn procedures, and follow all safety protocol as prescribed by management. The objective in this position is to become certified in HazMat training, confined space training, PowerSafe training and to participate in spill response calls under direct supervision, learn proper terminology, safety practices and general industry knowledge.
The position is a minimum of 6 months of probationary apprenticeship where the employee will be evaluated by management to determine if they are qualified to move forward in the training process. After the probationary period is satisfactorily completed the employee will be eligible for the Spill Tech II position. This advancement determination will be at management discretion and recommendation.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Follow ALL instructions given by project manager when dealing with a spill
· Follow ALL safety requirements
· Assist project manager and other techs as instructed
· Participate in training classes and events
· Keep response vehicles stocked according to published inventory levels
· Properly dispose of all waste materials at the end of each project
· Clean and secure all tools and equipment when jobs are completed
· Maintain cleanliness of all response vehicles
· Demonstrate the ability to listen, follow instructions and take initiative to complete assigned tasks
· Learn labeling system and properly label all materials
· Effectively learn and complete all required paperwork including but not limited to spill sheets and manifests
· Effectively learn procedures pertaining to spill response, clean-up, disposal requirements, PPE requirements
· Learn and abide by local, county, state and federal rules, regulations, guidelines and restrictions
REQUIREMENTS
· Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Must have valid drivers license and clean driving record
· Must have flexibility to work extended hours, early hours, late hours, weekends if needed and be able to participate in on-call rotation
· Demonstrate the ability to retain knowledge
· Must be able to properly wear all Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including Tyvex suits, respirators, hard toe shoes, hard hats, face masks, gloves, eye protection and any other PPE that may be required
· Must be able to lift 10-20 pounds consistently, 20-40 pounds regularly, 40-60 pounds occasionally and 60-80 pounds rarely
· Must be able to see either naturally or assisted with prescribed corrective lenses
· Must be able to hear either naturally or with prescribed corrective devices
· Effectively be able to communicate verbally
· Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, crouch, bend, squat, climb, lift overhead, and have no limitations to heavy physical activities
· Must be able to work in conditions with excessive temperatures
