What are the responsibilities and job description for the Entry Level Immigration Attorney position at CAROLINA LEGAL ASSOCIATES?
We are searching for an immigration attorney for an amazing non-profit. The attorney will provide substantive legal assistance and representation to lower-income eligible clients. This attorney will be establishing and growing the immigration practice for this firm. You will be working with management to create a thriving practice. Working within a non-profit law firm, the attorney will represent clients in a variety of immigration matters, including family-based immigration, asylum, removal defense, and employment-related immigration. The attorney will work with underserved populations, including low-income individuals, refugees, and other vulnerable groups. We are looking for someone with a strong commitment to public interest and commitment to expanding access to justice. Many of the clients work extremely hard but cannot afford private attorneys. Sample responsibilities:
- Developing and implementing immigration intake procedures and policies
- Provide legal advice and counsel to clients on immigration matters, including family-based petitions, asylum claims, adjustment of status, naturalization, temporary protected status (TPS), and deportation defense
- Assess client eligibility for various immigration benefits (e.g., family petitions, work visas, asylum applications, etc.)
- Represent clients in immigration proceedings before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), and other relevant authorities
- Advise clients on the legal and procedural aspects of their immigration cases, ensuring they understand the potential risks and outcomes
- Preparing for and conducting hearings and trials
- Preparing cases on appeal
- Preparing clients for interviews and other necessary tasks
- Performing legal research, analysis, and writing including drafting of petitions, applications, affidavits, pleadings, briefs, orders and other necessary documents
- Maintain accurate and detailed case files, tracking the progress of each case from start to finish, including deadlines for filings and hearings
- Assist in community outreach
- Represent the organization in external meetings, forums, and conferences related to immigration law
- Stay up-to-date on the latest changes in immigration law, regulations, and court rulings that may impact clients' rights and immigration options
- Build and maintain relationships with other attorneys, advocacy organizations, and stakeholders in the immigration field to stay informed about best practices and new opportunities for collaboration
- Assist in compiling data and client stories for internal reporting purposes and grant applications, ensuring compliance with grant requirements
Minimum requirements and other qualifications:
- A JD from an accredited law school
- Member of the SC Bar in good standing
- 1-3 years of immigration law experience
- Familiarity with U.S. immigration laws, procedures, and policies
- Committed and energetic person with strong analytical, research and interpersonal skills;
- Cultural humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency;
- Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision;
- Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with the ability to be detail-oriented;
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team.
