Special emphasis is placed on fiber optic patch panel reconfiguration, fiber jumper routing, testing, and documentation. The role involves decommissioning obsolete equipment and reconfiguring infrastructure to meet evolving service needs, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations. \
Key Responsibilities:
Installation & Assembly: * Install, configure, and test fiber optic and network equipment, including overhead ladder racks, fiber optic raceways, and other components within data centers and cable TV headends. * Assemble and install fiber jumpers, patch panels, optical couplers, and MUX/DEMUXs, adhering to industry standards for performance and safety. * Route, label, and manage fiber optic, CAT5/6, and coaxial cables while ensuring proper bend radius, stress management, and compliance with cabling standards. * Document fiber cable layouts, patch panel configurations, and network topologies for future audits and maintenance.
Cable Management & Maintenance:
- Organize and dress cables through overhead racks and fiber raceways, ensuring efficient airflow and easy access for future upgrades. * Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on fiber optic raceways, overhead ladder racks, and related systems. * Safely install, test, and decommission obsolete fiber optic, RF, and network equipment, ensuring minimal service disruption.
Troubleshooting & System Support:
- Utilize advanced diagnostic tools (e.g., OTDR, optical power meters, fiberscopes, RF signal meters) to identify and resolve issues with fiber optic systems and cable TV headend equipment. * Work closely with internal engineering teams and vendors to troubleshoot and resolve system irregularities and implement corrective actions to improve system performance. * Recommend and implement preventive maintenance measures to ensure optimal operation and prevent future system failures.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date records of all installations, system upgrades, maintenance tasks, and repairs. * Generate detailed performance reports and provide actionable insights to management to improve system performance, efficiency, and reliability.
Collaboration & Safety:
- Collaborate with internal engineering teams, outside plant technicians, and vendors to ensure efficient setup, deployment, and maintenance of infrastructure. * Adhere to safety protocols and industry standards (e.g., ANSI/TIA, BICSI, SCTE) while handling tools, cables, and network equipment. * Follow OSHA guidelines and company policies to maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certifications or an associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, or a related field preferred. * 3 years of experience in data center operations, fiber optic systems, cable TV headend systems, or telecommunications infrastructure.
Technical Skills:
- Expertise in designing and building structured cabling systems, including fiber optic raceways and overhead ladder racks. * Proficient in fiber optic cable installation, termination, and splicing. Experience with fusion splicing is a plus. * Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and schematics. * Familiarity with Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) systems, DOCSIS/CMTS technologies, and network topologies. * Expertise in diagnostic tools such as OTDR, optical power meters, fiberscopes, RF signal meters, and spectrum analyzers. * Experience using basic hand tools and specialized equipment for assembling structured cabling systems, including drills, cutting tools, and metal/plastic cutting equipment.
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have):
- Experience with critical systems such as HVAC, powering, and generators in a data center environment. * Familiarity with transport technologies such as CWDM, DWDM, SONET, and Ethernet. * Knowledge of SCTE standards, National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and FCC regulations. * Experience with video networking, IP-based systems, and data center networking protocols. * Certifications in fiber optic installation (e.g., BICSI, FOA) are a plus.
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to diagnose and resolve technical issues efficiently. * Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to work independently or collaboratively within a team. * Effective communication skills to interact with internal teams, external vendors, and customers.
Work Environment:
- Primarily indoor, temperature-controlled environments in data centers and cable TV headends. * Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and on ladders or platforms to access overhead infrastructure. * Some occasional outdoor work with outside plant technicians. * Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing ladders and working in tight spaces. * Availability for after-hours work, on-call duties, and emergency troubleshooting during scheduled maintenance windows.
Compliance & Safety:
- Strong commitment to safety, following OSHA regulations and company safety policies. * Must pass a drug screening and maintain a clean driving record. * Adhere to clean, safe, and responsible work practices at all times, particularly when handling electrical systems, network equipment, or working in hazardous environments.
