Summary
As a Surgical Technologist, assist in preparing patients and the operating room for surgeries under the direction of a surgeon or circulating RN. In Central Services, prepares and sterilizes reusable instruments, supplies and equipment for use throughout the hospital. Inventories, re-stocks and deliver supplies and equipment to all patient care areas.
Responsibilities
Surgical Technologist1. Prepares operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile dressings and solutions2. Assembles sterile and non-sterile equipment and assure all are in proper working order.3. Prepares patients for surgery : washes, shaves and disinfects incision sites; transports to the OR, positions on the operating table and applies sterile surgical drapes. 4. Assists surgical team in putting on gowns, masks and gloves.5. Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants during surgery. May hold retractors, cut sutures.6. Maintains a count of sponges, sharps, supplies and instruments.7. Observes surgery for adherence to proper aseptic technique. Reports and corrects any issues.8. Prepares, cares for and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis.9. Assists with transporting patients to recovery and transporting to their rooms as needed10. Cleans and re-stocks operating room post procedure.Central Services Technician1. Collects all used equipment.2. Decontaminates all reusable equipment and instruments according to policy.3. Prepares, packs, inspects instruments for sterilization using the correct procedure.4. Monitors the sterilization process, including daily charting of sterilization reports.5. Maintains accurate quality assurance standards.6. Maintains records of all items sterilized, decontaminated on a daily basis.7. Ensures instrumentation is processed and in correct working order and makes arrangements for repair, as needed.8. Monitors the location of all equipment. Relocates equipment to increase work efficiency and safety.9. Maintains all patient care equipment in good working condition, checks working function, cords and outlets and electrical checks due.10. Monitors safe levels of back-up equipment and supplies for routine and emergency situations.11. Fills, delivers supplies and equipment in a prompt, cooperative, and efficient manner.12. Assists with maintaining dating system for recall of supplies and or sterilization failure.13. Maintains daily records of all items issued to the departments.14. Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The specifications listed below are representative of the education and experience as well as knowledge, skill and ability required.
- Completion of a Surgical Technologist training course OR three (3) years of surgical technology experience required.
- Current BLS / CPR certification
- Must obtain Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification within one year of hire or at position entry
- Minimum one year experience with medical supplies, equipment and surgical instruments preferred
- Knowledge of sterilization techniques, medical instruments and equipment
- Excellent hearing in order to hear muffled voices over background noise
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with physicians, nurses, patients and fellow staff members,
- Must be able to take callBasic computer skills required for :
- Accessing and navigating CTRH intranet for forms, policies and procedures
- Accessing and entering data on organization wide software such as etime and Outlook email
- Accessing and using internet resources where required to perform job duties
