Med Surg-Charge Nurse - Full Time
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Charge Nurse promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization. The Charge Nurse is responsible for directing and coordinating the patient care activities on the Med-Surg/ICU units, as well as directing and coordinating the patient care activities for the entire medical center on an evening, night or weekend shift. This includes responding to security and other emergency incidents; assessing patient needs, and ensuring appropriate staffing and resources levels. Charge Nurse responsibilities include, but are not limited to; patient care, patient assignment to staff, bed control, conflict resolution, assures execution of hospital policy/procedure and state law as related to nursing care. Must be consistent, dependable and accurate in carrying out responsibilities.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education Preferred:
- BSN preferred.
License Required:
- Possession of valid license to practice as a RN the State of NV.
Certification Required:
- BLS for healthcare providers required.
- ACLS certification required.
Minimum Work Experience:
- 5 years of experience in nursing with supervisory nursing experience preferred. At least 2 years recent ICU experience, ER experience preferred.
- Knowledge of nursing principles and practices; hospital policies, procedures and routines; disease processes and treatment, including psychological, environmental and physical factors that influence a patient’s well-being.
- Working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing patient care and medical center operations.
- Ability to supervise the department in the provision of patient care; and provide excellent and courteous customer service and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to establish priorities in solving unusual medical and administrative problems; facilitate communication between staff and administration.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Communication
- Demonstrates high level of nursing skill and leadership ability.
- Create a workplace environment where staff is working toward the same essential goals and strategies; provide 2- way communication where ideas can he shared in a non-punitive environment.
- Provide effective communication process between administration, management, and staff, i.e., staff meetings, communication books, communication boards.
- Communicates in an effective and professional manner within all interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, nursing staff and all other employees of the medical center.
- Performs patient rounding as instructed by Nurse Manager.
Documentation
- Maintains accurate documentation and recordkeeping to support the day-to-day activities of the department.
- Accurately documents shift staffing, patient assignments, staffing changes, etc.
- Works with staff to ensure accuracy of documentation on events or incident reports which may be potential risk management issues.
Admissions/Transfer
- Assures patient safety and regulatory compliance.
- Bed Control: ensures patient bed assignments are appropriate based on needs of patients, skills of staff, infection control policies, and preferences of physician.
- Facilitates admissions/transfers in a timely manner while assuring patient safety and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrates problem solving skills to manage surges and MCI's, acting as incident commander until administration arrives.
- Complies with EMTALA and ensure that documentation is present supporting the planning process for discharges and transfers.
Clinical Resource

Maintains standards of nursing care and implementing department policies and procedures.
- Assists nursing staff members to independently solve problems.
- Stays up to date on current best practice and nursing standards of care. Acts as resource for staff implementation when providing patient care.
- Actively participates in Quality Assurance/Improvement and assists with implementation and evaluation of improvement action plan.
- Provides technical and administrative direction to department staff regarding policies, protocols and/or procedures.
- Forwards issues to appropriate department manager in a timely manner.
- Assists with the coordination of new employee’s orientation.
- Addresses patient complaints in a timely manner and resolves if possible, or forwards to appropriate personnel.
- Assists with follow-up to occurrence reports and medication events.
- Utilizes chain of command to quickly resolve issues.
- Documents concerns as needed to promote follow-up.
- Uses the chain of command as needed to quickly resolve issues.
- Provides access to supplies, equipment and pharmaceuticals those departments are closed.
Staff Responsibilities
- Assist with training of staff and overseeing validation of staff’s competencies as directed by department manager.
- Assists with employee performance evaluations if requested by Department Manager.
- Assists with appropriate and safe staffing levels based on current acuities.
- Provides coverage for vacant positions and for break relief.
