The Job Description
Performs intermediate skilled human support work translating and interpreting for Spanish speaking clients.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class translates and interprets for Spanish speaking clients. Work includes translating and interpreting for clients through the WIC program. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Public Health Nursing Supervisor I and is evaluated by a review of records, reports, discussions, and by observation in terms of the overall accuracy of the work.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Translates and interprets for Spanish speaking clients.
- Receives telephone calls from Spanish speaking clients to schedule appointments.
- Assists with checking clients in and out of the clinic; provides information to clients.
- Interprets for various educational sessions.
- Screens Spanish speaking clients to determine eligibility for services.
- Provides clinical outreach services via home visits.
- Enters a variety of data into the computer system.

- Thorough knowledge of County and department policies and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, rules, and regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of required program manuals.
- Thorough knowledge in preparing reports and other types of correspondence.
- Thorough knowledge in the use of the equipment required for the position.
- Thorough knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software (e.g. Crossroads, NC Tracks, NCIR, etc.).
- Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to read and write fluently in English and Spanish.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret difficult materials with complicated information with specialized vocabulary.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, clients, consultants, nurses, vendors, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
- Work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force to move objects.
- Work frequently requires sitting, walking, standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, and repetitive motions, occasionally requires reaching with hands and arms, lifting, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work requires no exposure to environmental conditions.
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and moderate experience in Spanish interpretation and translation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Completion of Medical Translation training within 6 months of hire.
Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
