The Job Description
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs a variety of sanitation tasks to keep the Senior Center’s kitchen and dining facilities operating under health and safety standards. This position is one of a two-person team that is responsible for the Senior Center’s nutritional programs. The employee will provide lunch service to patrons Monday through Friday and will be required to collaborate with their team members to ensure all critical tasks are completed. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Senior Services Program Superintendent and is evaluated through periodic meetings, observation, quality of work, and health department inspections.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Prepares the kitchen and serving counters for meal service.
- Dishes out appropriate portions of daily hot meals to seniors in a timely and orderly manner.
- Stores and disposes of leftover food appropriately.
- Accepts delivery of congregate meals and checks food temperatures for appropriate levels in accordance with specific guidelines as provided.
- Serves as liaison for congregate meal patrons, providing answers to questions and reporting concerns and requests related to their meals.
- Conducts inventory checks every two months.
- Reports kitchen repair/maintenance or supply needs to the Senior Services Program Superintendent.
- Sweeps and mops floors, moves lunch tables and chairs for cleaning, washes dishes, disposes of garbage, and operates washer and dryer.
- Maintains supply of fresh towels in the fitness room.
- Works with the other Kitchen Services Coordinator in performing these duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of food service requirements involving health and sanitation.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, authority figures, senior adults, community and governmental agencies, volunteers, and vendors.
- Ability to count and record numbers and temperatures on forms.
- Ability to use Microsoft Outlook.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to organize tasks and function in a busy environment.
- Ability to operate commercial kitchen appliances, a washer and dryer, and use a food thermometer.
Physical Requirements
- Work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and the frequent exertion of up to 35 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, repetitive motions, and lifting. Work occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, or crawling, and pushing or pulling.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to recognize information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires operating machines, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work requires the occasional use of toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme cold or heat.
- Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Desirable Experience and Education
High school diploma and one year of experience in food service or a customer service industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
Possession of ServSafe certification within three months of hire.
