Title: Language Facilitator/Exceptional Children’s Services


Qualifications:

1. High School diploma.

2. Must annually complete 15 hours of training related to facilitation of language approved by the local education agency


Reports to:
EC Case Manager, Principal and/or Central Office Supervisor and Director of Exceptional Children.

Job Goal:
Under general supervision, provides communication support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
(D/HH) and mainstreamed in the general education classroom for all or part of their school day. The Language Facilitator’s primary responsibility is to facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other school personnel. Other duties that may be performed when not facilitating communication include providing individual academic support, note taking, providing assistance to the classroom teacher, and participating in meetings as a member of the educational team. Provided support for social, emotional and mental health for at risk students.


Performance Responsibilities:

1. Follow all rules, policies, and procedures of Carteret County Schools, along with state and federal regulations, including IDEA.

2. Monitors D/HH students’ understanding of all auditory information within the educational setting and facilitates communication between the student who is deaf or hard of hearing and his peers and adults in the educational environment.
3. Monitors student’s comprehension and documents needs and problems encountered.
4. Studies the content of the lessons prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson.
5. Academically supports the students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher. Provides feedback to teachers as appropriate to support the needs of the student.
6. Serves as liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
7. Oversees daily maintenance and use of assistive devices performing simple troubleshooting as necessary.
8. Gradually leads the D/HH student toward more independence, assuming responsibility for his/her own education and communicative competence. Expectations at the primary level are more comprehensive than at the intermediate level, with the goal of gradually phasing out the service to an individual student as appropriate.
9. May assist the teacher with routine duties when not engaged in facilitating communication.
10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested by the direct supervisor, Director and/or principal.

Terms of Employment:
Ten-month year/At Will/FLSA Non-Exempt


Starting Salary and/or Grade:
Salary based on local salary scale.


Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Carteret County Public Schools Board policy.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate with school personnel, students, and parents while complying with the confidentiality requirements in local, state, and federal policies and statutes.
  • Speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress, and adapt when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Working knowledge of subjects being facilitated. Understanding of deafness and its impact on language development.
  • Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
  • General knowledge of methods of adapting instruction, equipment, and tools for students with special needs.
  • Ability to work as a part of an Individualized Education Program team.
  • Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as, walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch and key requiring repetitive motions.
  • Physical ability to lift students of various weights independently and with shared responsibilities.
