Job Title: Teacher Assistant
A well-organized classroom environment is essential for students to take full advantage of the instructional program and available resources. This position plays a crucial role in supporting the teacher in achieving this goal.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer scores and record student achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in devising strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
Duties:
- Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
- Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Maintain bulletin boards and other classroom displays.
- Assist with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
- Read to students, listen to students read, and participate in oral communications with students.
- Assist students in the library or media center.
- Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher.
- Record student attendance and collect and record collection of money.
- Help students with their clothing and assist with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines.
- Alert the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Serve as the chief source of information and help to substitute teachers assigned in absence of the regular teacher.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and participate in professional development programs as assigned.
- Obtain a School Bus Drivers License and drive a school bus when requested.
Requirements:
- Associates degree or a minimum of 48 semester college credit hours.
- NC License to drive a school bus or ability to get one.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
- Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions.
- Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
- General knowledge of methods of adapting instruction, equipment, and tools for students with special needs.
- Physical ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the job.
Terms of Employment:
Ten month year/At will/FLSA Non Exempt

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
