JOB RELATIONSHIPS

Responsible to Lab Administrative Director, Lab Manager, and Pathologist. Supervises work of laboratory personnel (staff techs, assistants, and phlebotomists) working in, or providing specimens for, their lab section.

DEFINITION OF POSITION
-
Working closely with the administrative director, supervisors are responsible for the technical and/or direct supervision of laboratory personnel, for the coordination of training and competency testing of personnel and students, and for the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and quality control practices, within their respective departments.

Supervisors must work as a staff tech in their section, capable of competently performing all procedures, quality control, and instrument maintenance.

Ensuring that test systems function properly, this includes pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing

Ensuring that the required proficiency testing is performed, reviewed, and any necessary corrective action is performed, as appropriate

Ensuring that quality control and quality assessment programs are established and maintained

Ensuring that remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications
-
Ensuring that patient results are reported only when the systems are functioning properly

Ensuring that testing personnel have the appropriate education, experience, and training to supervise staff and to perform testing competently and accurately

Ensuring that all employees complete the appropriate orientations and that employee training and competency is documented

Ensuring that annual performance evaluations are performed

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional
-
Education: graduate of an accredited clinical laboratory program.

MT or equivalent - BS degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or related field.

MLT or equivalent - Associates Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

Registered by a nationally recognized medical technology association or military equivalent. ASCP preferred. Registry eligible required.

Minimum of 4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory with primary emphasis on the section of responsibility preferred.

Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the college level.
