The Surgical Technology Student is in the direct supervision of a Surgical Tech Preceptor and as well as the supervision of the Registered Nurse. Also responsible to the Director of Surgical Services and the OR Clinical Operations Manager.

DEFINITION OF POSITION
-
The Surgical Technology Student Extern functions as an integral part of the perioperative team in the first, or second Surgical Technology role under the direct supervision of a Surgical Tech Preceptor and as well as the supervision of the Registered Nurse in
delivering safe and effective care to the patient during the intraoperative period. This would allow the Surgical Tech Student to be better prepared to transition to their Surgical Tech role upon completion of their Surgical Tech Program enhancing the recruitment and
retention of Surgical Technology Students.Under the direct supervision of a Surgical Technology Preceptor, the extern will scrub basic surgical procedures. Demonstrates ability to problem solve in relation to the procedure being performed. Applied basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care. Applies basic knowledge of electricity, chemistry, computers, robotics, and lasers for optimal surgical patient care. Demonstrates knowledge and practice of patient care
concepts and perioperative teamwork. Applies principles of sterile technique during surgical procedures.Essential Functions:Applies the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to maintain a sterile environment. Demonstrates competency in select technical and psychomotor skills, judgment and appropriate knowledge base. Provides age specific care to obstetrical patients in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the department.-
- Assists in organization and coordination of supplies and equipment to maintain an efficient and cost effective department.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers and self. Demonstrates awareness of and adherence to safety and legal requirements established at the hospital and unit level and established policies and procedures.
- Accurately charges for supplies needed for the surgical procedure.
- Performs instrument, sharps, and sponge counts according to hospital policy.
- Applies principles of asepsis to maintain sterility during surgical set up and procedure.
- Prepares instrumentation, supplies, and equipment for usage during the procedure.
- Pass instruments, supplies, and devices to the surgeon during the procedure.
- Prepare and pass off specimen(s) as appropriate.
- Measure, label, and pass medications utilized during the surgical procedure.
- Performs decontamination and sterilization of surgical instrumentation per hospital policy.
- Assists with transfer of the patient and cleaning of the rooms.

QUALIFICATIONS

Professional
-
High School Diploma or GED
-
Must be enrolled in a Surgical Technology Program and has completed a minimum of two semesters of clinical rotations.

AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire.
