Job Description
Position Summary: The Coordinator of Youth Ministries at Carteret Street United Methodist Church (CSUMC) plans and executes activities for the youth of the church that support the mission of the United Methodist Church, that is, to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Youth activities at CSUMC should foster faith in Jesus Christ and encourage and equip youth to be in ministry to others.
Qualifications: The Coordinator of Youth Ministries of the CSUMC must:
a. Demonstrate a personal commitment to Jesus Christ by his or her words and actions;
b. Have a strong desire to help youth grow in their faith and become faithful disciples of Jesus Christ;
c. Be flexible and willing and able to work cooperatively with others, e.g., parents, and other members of the congregation and staff of the CSUMC, to plan, organize, and carry out activities for the youth, while maintaining a positive attitude and cheerful disposition;
d. Respect confidentiality, i.e., protect the privileged and personal information of the youth and their parents, e.g., personal financial information, family and medical information, and personal identifying information, as well as experiences and feelings shared with you;
e. Be computer literate and know how to use social media;
f. Have at least several years of relevant experience.
Job Requirements:
1. Report to the senior pastor and function as the primary staff person in all matters relating to the youth of the church.
2. Devote approximately ten hours per week to the job.
3. Be a regular member of the worshiping community of CSUMC, and be fully engaged in the life of the church.
4. Develop a program of spiritual growth opportunities for the youth at CSUMC.
5. Show adult volunteers how to work effectively with groups of junior and senior high school aged youth.
6. Plan and implement age-appropriate activities and service projects for groups of junior and senior high school aged youth that promote faith development, encourage friendly association, teach the importance of Christian service, and provide opportunities for recreation.
7. Plan and execute Sunday evening Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) programs that are scripturally based or appropriately themed to engage the youth of the church and to encourage their participation and regular attendance.
8. Manage the fund-raising activities, e.g., the pumpkin patch fund-raiser, that generate the resources needed to support planned youth activities and trips.
9. Work with the church staff to integrate youth activities into the other ministries of the congregation when appropriate.
10. Provide a timely and accurate schedule of youth activities to the senior pastor’s administrative assistant. Work with the administrative assistant to publicize youth activities in the church newsletter, special mailings, church bulletin announcements, the web page, and so forth.
11. As a member of the Church Council, provide a report on youth ministries when the Council meets.
12. Encourage the youth of the church to fully participate in all planned activities and service projects and to be fully engaged in the life of the church to include its worship services, annual bazaar, Wednesday Niters, South Carolina Conference activities like Revolution, Asbury Hills events, and so forth.
13. Manage the disbursement of the funds budgeted for youth ministries. Be fiscally responsible by staying within the approved budget and adhering to the purchasing policies of the church.
14. Alert the senior pastor to the possibility of church membership for the families of youth who are participating in the youth programs of CSUMC but are not members.
15. Grow his/her knowledge of youth ministry through educational opportunities when offered.
16. Undergo a criminal background check. Follow the safe sanctuary policy of CSUMC and coordinate with the senior pastor to satisfy background check requirements for others involved in the youth ministries of the church.
