This is a Civil Service Position.
Requirements: Candidates must complete a civil service exam to determine exam eligibility. If eligible for the exam, the successful candidate is required to pass exam and score within the top (3) three.
Hourly Rate: Commensurate with Experience
Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
DISTINQUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for providing first line technical assistance and support for information technology users. A Computer Support Specialist usually is the initial contact for information technology users seeking technical assistance and/or questions related to computer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment. An incumbent also may create computer user identification names and passwords, perform basic computer operations such as querying a database and printing reports, and creating backups of information according to a prearranged schedule. The work is performed under direct supervision. The incumbent exercises no supervision. Does related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or a New York State register college or university with an associate's degree in computer science, compute technology, information on management technology, or science, or related field and one year of work experience in user support in the operation of a personal computer and peripheral equipment;
OR
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience as stated in (A);
OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (illustrative only)
- Operates a help desk and receives phone calls from computer end users problems with computer hardware, software, networks or peripheral equipment and/or referring same to appropriate staff for additional support; ·
- Provides phone system and voice mail support and troubleshoots both systems as required; Creates and maintains a computerized log of help desk calls received and actions taken;
- Places service calls to appropriate vendors for repair of computer hardware, software, network or peripheral equipment;
- Transfers files and creates backups of information either daily, weekly, monthly or yearly according to a pre-arranged schedule;
- Maintains and manages communication links via phone lines; routers; modems and digital communication links, diagnosing and resolving problems as necessary;
- Creates user identification names and passwords for agency personnel;
- Creates and maintains a computer database of end user and pertinent agency information;
- Maintains hard copies of end user profiles, applications and authorized signatures;
- Queries a database and creates and prints reports as needed;
- Enters data into various systems, spreadsheets and other databases as required;
- Creates and prints mailing labels and reports to notify end users regarding pertinent information.

Good knowledge of computer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment supported by a computer network system; good knowledge of computer hardware and software technology; ability to lead others on an assigned project; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to problem-solve computer user hardware and software problems; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including databases and spreadsheet; ability to form and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and empathize with computer user needs and concerns; ability to follow written and oral instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
