What are the responsibilities and job description for the Career Specialist: Health and Science; Pre-Health Advising Co-Chair position at Carthage College?
The Career Specialist in The Aspire Center is an integrated member of the campus holistic advising team/model, working with faculty, student success advisors, and other colleagues, to provide added support to students for their success during and after Carthage. This specialist will serve as a liaison and build a relationship with a set of academic departments, including the following: Athletic Training, Biology, Chemistry, Exercise and Sport Science, Neuroscience, Nursing, and Astronomy; collaborate, as needed, with other related departments.
Responsibilities:
- Advise students on the full range with topics of career development tasks such as recognizing personal capabilities; defining career plans; understanding expectations for their field(s) of interest; networking with mentors, graduate/professional school representatives, and employers; obtaining experiential learning, and securing post-graduate opportunities consistent with their personal and professional development goals. The Career Specialist will help students explore their interests and sense of purpose balancing professional and personal life roles.
- Collaborates with the Divisions of Natural and Social Sciences and Professional Studies to administer the pre-health program for advising students in accordance with the pre-health program.
- Collaborate with faculty, campus partners, and Aspire team members to plan, design, implement and assess formal and informal learning opportunities aligned with The Aspire Program pillars: creativity, entrepreneurship, leadership and career development.
- Facilitate student engagement with their My Aspire Plans (MAPs) through the coordination of events, presentations and site visits, etc.
- Promote The Aspire Program to prospective Carthage College students and communicate the program to the current students and other key audiences.
- Work with the Internship and Experiential Learning Coordinator to Build awareness about on- and off-campus experiences that enable students to build skills/networks to gain access to meaningful experiential learning opportunities.
- Develop resource materials and tools to help students best navigate their My Aspire Plan (MAP).
- Integrate traditional and contemporary advising methods and practices to support students in their personal and professional development.
- Work with the Hedberg Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies to create scalable student experiences.
- Collaborate with the Purposeful Life and Leadership Coordinator to link and leverage existing and new leadership opportunities.
- Integrate the concepts of creativity, resilience and curiosity into annual student experiences and events.
- Contribute to campus-wide efforts to strengthen students' cultural competencies in their community and workplaces.
- Responsible for teaching a section(s) of College Success Seminar every fall and a section of the Aspire related January term course.
- Leverage alumni and employer networks to provide meaningful student experiences.
- Safely transport students in a 12-passenger van for occasional site visits, ensuring adherence to all traffic laws and safety protocols.
- Complete other duties as assigned or as opportunities emerge.
EDUCATION/PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Master's Degree or equivalent preferred; bachelor's degree required ● Preference given to applicants with relevant industry experience
- Clean driving record
PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to work cross-generationally with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
- Experience in advising, teaching, or counseling.
- Skilled with use of technology including communication tools, databases and information management systems.
- Possess effective written and verbal communication skills across mediums.
- Available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
