About The Team And Position

We're looking for analytical, curious individuals with a passion for data to join our Decision Support Systems team within the larger Analytics group at Carvana. Our team builds algorithms, models, and optimization tools that power Carvana's logistics operations. We develop and maintain systems that optimize the movement of 15K vehicles per month cross-country using our 9 car hauler and single car hauler fleet. We develop, test, and maintain near real-time algorithms and systems that continuously optimize vehicle and truck movements, delivery dates promised to customers, and availability of appointments on our website.

As an Associate Data Scientist, you'll work closely with senior team members to analyze data, build models, and develop tools that drive operational efficiencies. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong analytical skills who is looking to break into the field of Data Science and grow their career in a supportive, high-impact environment.

What You’ll Be Doing

Applying Your Analytical Skills:

• Apply data science techniques to extract meaningful insights from Carvana's rich datasets
• Create powerful visualizations and interactive dashboards using Tableau and other tools
• Develop compelling reports and analyses that drive business decisions
• Build algorithms that get deployed in our production systems to optimize operations and automate processes
• Help model real-world scenarios that solve complex logistics challenges
• Write clean, efficient Python code that transforms raw data into actionable intelligence
• Collaborating Across the Business:
• You won't just be hiding behind your computer screen crunching code. You'll be presenting and collaborating with stakeholders across the organization
• You'll work closely with a variety of roles including Engineers, Product Managers, Business Stakeholders, Analysts, and other Data Scientists.
• You're a key player in our ultimate goal of making strong data driven decisions in Carvana's day-to-day operations and outlining KPIs that help us define success.
• You'll work to understand the in's and out's of how our business partners run operations by conducting side by side and shadowing to make your process optimizations truly tangible and actionable.
• Work under the mentorship of a Senior Data Scientist to develop your technical skills
• Learn to translate business problems into data questions and analytical solutions
  

What You Should Have

• Bachelor's degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research or a related quantitative field
• Strong analytical mindset and curiosity to dive into data and work on open-ended analyses
• No professional data science experience needed, but a strong motivation to build your career in this field
• Eagerness to learn from our team of experienced data scientists and operations researchers
• Experience coding in Python or another programming language
• Experience working with SQL (Snowflake experience is a plus)
• Understanding of fundamental statistical concepts
• Experience creating data visualizations (Tableau preferred)
• Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to various audiences
• Passion for solving real-world problems with data
• Ability to connect data to real-life applications and abstract mathematical models
