JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) Supervisor, the Public Safety Telecommunicator performs skilled technical communications work in the operation of the 911 Telephone System and the PSAP Communication Center. Work involves the exercise of independent judgment in receiving and transmitting law enforcement, fire, medical and other emergency services information by radio, telephone, and computer and determining what actions are necessary based on the call.

The Emergency Dispatch Center is a 24/7/365 operation. This position requires the ability to work nights, weekends and holidays and be adaptive to shift work.

The full pay range for this position is $27.63 - $41.45 per hour. Starting pay for this position is $30.68 per hour. Candidates with relevant 911 Dispatcher experience may be eligible for elevated rates of pay based on review of qualifications.

911 Dispatchers are paid a weekend differential of $1.00 per hour for each hour worked from Midnight Saturday through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. A 911 Dispatcher working a majority of hours between 3:00 PM and 6:00 AM will also be paid a night shift differential of one dollar and twenty-five cents ($1.25) per hour.

The interview schedule will be as follows:
  • Initial Teams interview for all who meet minimum qualifications - April 2 and 3
  • Passing candidates will be invited to an in-person interview - April 10

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gathers information via multi-channel radio, 911 emergency and non-emergency phone systems, computer terminal, and/or in person. Responsible for exercising independent judgment to solicit, identify, assess, evaluate, prioritize, summarize and transmit information regarding calls for service. Utilizes extensive training, departmental policies and procedures, mandates, and laws governing a dispatcher's response and conduct to determine appropriate procedure and necessary action.

  • Dispatches emergency and non-emergency calls for the entire county to include law enforcement, fire departments, ambulance services and other emergency and non-emergency service providers.

  • Maintains status of persons, vehicles and equipment dispatched to calls, and provide on-going updates to personnel as information is received.

  • Receives transmitted requests from field personnel for emergency assistance and determines type and level of response necessary. Calls for backup, medical, support services and/or mutual aid as needed.

  • Monitors multiple radio channels on an 800 MHz region-wide radio system. Assists in coordinating activities between law enforcement, fire/rescue, medical, emergency management, municipal utility, and County Highway units operating in the field.

  • Creates and maintains electronic records and logs of activity as required using a Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD).

  • Requests, disseminates, enters, verifies, modifies and cancels protected data through computerized terminals linked to State, Federal, Interstate and local Law Enforcement systems to include but not limited to; driver and motor vehicle information, NCIC (National Crime Information Center) 'hot files'; criminal histories; persons, property, vehicle and other restricted data files.

  • Assists warrant division; verifies identification and 2nd party verification of person(s) using MNJIS, Driver Vehicle Services (DVS) and Records Management System (RMS), enters accurate person(s) and arrest information into warrant module; confirms, verifies and removes active warrant assuring MNJIS procedures are followed.

  • Knowledge of various county, city and township ordinances and procedures to assist with the call for service.

  • Provides general information not limited to; filing police reports, impounded vehicles,
returned property, locations in the county; various telephone, address and contact information, special event information etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of full time paid work experience in a customer service related area interacting with people

SCORED EXAMINATION PROCESS

All applications will be screened for minimum qualifications. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to an initial screening interview, held via Teams. Candidates receiving a passing score will move to an in-person interview onsite at the Carver County Sheriff's Office. Final selection for the position will include successful completion of interviews, reference checks, CJIS background investigation, pre-placement physical, and psychological exam.
